I have an AS degree in Math and Science from Mount San Jacinto College in CA. I also have a BS degree in Mathematics and trained as a teacher in the UK. I have tutored students for the last fifteen years. I am a member of the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics). I REALLY enjoy what I do! Working with young people is fantastic!
I am able to offer tuition in basic math, geometry, Algebra I and II, pre-calculus. I can also help students prepare for Math SATS too: I can provide plenty and plenty more resources to aid their progress.
I believe that every individual has potential if taught by the right teacher for him or her.
Every child enjoys individual care and attention - I haven't come across any student who doesn't! Thus, I have high expectations of all students I teach and expect them to show a willingness to learn! I instill motivation, enthusiasm and confidence in my students (we also have a "good laugh" sometimes). I am able to employ a variety of teaching and learning techniques so that I can determine which ones work best for individual students and I tailor lessons to suit them. I enjoy helping students develop cognitive skills: encourage students to investigate ideas and understand fundamental concepts. I also encourage students to ask questions (no matter how stupid the questions seems to them-no question is stupid!). We all make mistakes when learning new material, so just keep practicing!! I also emphasize the use of key mathematical terminology. I am also very down to earth, patient and understanding (I am always available to talk with students about different issues.
I was a substitute teacher and worked with SPED students. I can help them with basic math and English. I have experience working with children with Down syndrome, mild autism and hemophilia. I have worked with students from Montville, Norwich, Waterford and East Lyme School districts.
Please note: I do not complete ALL homework for students but will teach students the concepts needed in order to answer homework questions. Also, you need to contact me at least TWO days prior to the session to detail -in depth- topics that you need to review, so I can prepare appropriate material.
Over the years, it has been a great joy for me to see the students I've tutored develop confidence and be very successful. I get to know the students very well and know when they're working well and when they're NOT!
Here are a few mathematical questions to ask yourself:
Why does a negative times a negative equal a positive?
When we divide a number by zero, why is the answer undefined?
Why does the sum of the digits of multiples of 9 add up to 9?
How many lines of symmetry does a circle have?
Does infinity - infinity really equal zero?
There are some great mathematical books out there too.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
