Hi! My name Marissa, and I am a PhD candidate in Classics at Columbia University, and in January 2026 I will defend my dissertation (finally!). For the past 9 years I have taught Latin and Ancient Greek at all levels, Classical Mythology in translation, and topic seminars at both the University of Maryland and Columbia.
I have 5+ years experience tutoring students in Latin and Ancient Greek ranging in age from 12 years old to 65. I am passionate about accessibility to education, and I believe that all students, regardless of socio-economic background and access to previous learning opportunities, can succeed in their chosen academic pursuits.
Furthermore, my pedagogy always is student-centered. In our first session together we will set learning goals that will frame the course of our time together. In our individual sessions I value and prioritize communication: What is confusing? What are your successes? What do you need?
As a tutor I intentionally create learning environments that are uplifting, fun, and encouraging—a place where mistakes are learning opportunities and there truly is no such thing as a dumb question.
Finally, I know that continued practice is important. Therefore, after each session I make worksheets that are tailored to you and the material you’re currently learning.
I look forward to working together!
