Bio

I have a very strong background in early reading intervention programs and fluency in my 10 years of work as an associate ELA editor at Pearson. I'm familiar with Reading/Writing Workshop and have trained in the Orton-Gillingham reading program. I've also developed and corrected Math assessments for Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt, and in both areas of reading and math I coach students along, applying proven strategies to differentiate instruction continuously in my work.

I have taught ESL freshman Writing for five semesters, and I have privately tutored speakers of French and Japanese. I assist part-time in a self-contained classroom for the School District of the Chathams, which I've done for four years.

I've integrated effective teaching methods into my tutoring lessons from all of areas of my experience, including Reading intervention, Writing, and ESL. I have a B.A. in Journalism and an M.Litt. in Writing.

I edited and wrote for Pearson's ELA Curriculum Division for 10 years. Much of my experience in piloting reading and writing programs and observing classrooms where readers and writers struggled fueled my passion in these subject areas. It was immensely helpful in building my teaching skills, to provide classroom or private help to students who can excel with the right coaching.

In addition to the editing work I did for 10 years at Pearson, I've trained in the Orton Gillingham methodology to teaching phonics. With the teaching of letters and sounds, something known as phonological awareness develops. To tackle phonics, I use a systematic, multi-sensory approach to teaching, the OG methodology and adaptations of it, where students can learn to excel in their reading and writing skills. Many students have trouble with decoding, or sounding out words they have never seen before. By using the OG method, I can introduce a series of sounds and their corresponding letter(s) and then show how those sounds blend together to form words. The reverse, encoding, is the process of the student taking their knowled
