I am a qualified professional with 10+ years working in public schools in urban, suburban, and rural environments. I grew up traveling in the military, a middle-child of a two parent home with twin sisters and a gifted brother. Our family also spent a great deal of my childhood in Europe. After graduating from a base school,I attended college in Louisiana and relocated to New Jersey to complete three degrees in Psychology, English, and Social Work while working for the New Jersey Department of Education. I love working towards building the learner's confidence through M.A.P.S.(METHODS ATTITUDES POSSIBILITIES SOLUTIONS(TM)} a special curriculum designed to remove emotional blockages and identify and re-emphasize the importance of unique learning styles. I believe that we are still learning what works, but we have to use multiple means of instruction, positive support, and assessment/plans. If you think you can't, you won't...if the right person tells you that you can, you'll try! I can't express enough how much my daughter and myself appreciate Ms. T. From day one she has been so patient and pushed my daughter to better and to always try. My daughter is always looking forward to her tutoring every week. She has my daughter wanting and excited to learn. Every penny is well worth it. Ms. T is not your average tutor!!
Video camera tutoring very helpful. I expect to learn more next time. Facebook tutoring helpful.
Need to get better. Very good.
I was sold on Ms. T's credentials and reviews, needed my daughter to "buy in" to the idea of being tutored. Ms. T was AWESOME with my daughter... by the end of the session my daughter was RAVING about her! The tips she shared with my daughter really helped her with studying and preparing for two big tests coming up! We both can't wait for the next session!
Always willing to help out, even if you call on her at the last minute. Continues to do a very good job.
Shelley met my 19 year old son at the college campus library and obtained a private room for them to work on their first assignment.
She kept him motivated to come up with ideas to write about and seemed to make a connection on their first meeting. I look forward to her working weekly with him in order to keep him on schedule with his written assignments which seem to bog him down when he attempts to do them on his own. I am very appreciative of making the connection and hope to continue in order to offer my son a successful start to college. Thanks Shelley.
Shelley T. has helped my daughter a great deal. She is very patient and has excellent tactics to target her weakness. My daughter looks forward to her sessions as well.
Very experienced tutor, lighthearted and encouraging. I would highly recommended this tutor. I'm more motivated to study and learn with Shelley T.
Ms. Shelley has been helping me in my English in almost one month, and I really surprised that I learned that quickly. Now because of her I gain more self confidence to achieve my goals in life.
This tutor has an excellent skills for English especially in writing. I received all "A"s and "B"s in my writing class as a result of working with Shelley. I guarantee that this tutor will help you achieve your goals.
This is the first time I have used WyzAnt Tutoring. It was extremely easy to find the right tutor for my daughter. I had the pleasure of meeting with Shelley T. and she left a great impression of herself. My daughter really likes her tutor and we look forward to seeing results soon. Thank you.
My son is learning so much from his tutor. He is more confident with reading, vocabulary and comprehends more of what he is reading. He said to me “mom she's the best tutor, we should stick with Ms. Shelley.” Shelley assessed his skill level and developed a plan to meet my son’s needs. She gave him supportive material including a book on "how to write" and a copy of a young adult fiction book so he could read and practice his writing skills.
Shelley is working with him to improve his study skills, test taking strategies, critical reading & thinking and memory recall. His tutoring sessions have already helped him score higher on tests and become more focused in the classroom. Before Shelley we tried one of the large national tutoring centers. At this center there were up to three students per tutor. With Shelley my son gets one on one attention focused on his specific needs. I highly recommend Shelley T. as your child’s next tutor.
Since this was my first time using a tutor she made me feel very comfortable and hopeful over the telephone. Even though she was an hour late for our first session(she couldn't find our home) she accommodated me by coming to my home when typically the session takes place in a public library. I only had an hour but I was impressed the way she worked with my child. I feel very confident that my son will be improving with Shelley's help and looking forward to having her part of our family.
Thank you for the honest and excellent review!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I had the exciting opportunity to work with high school students in Orange NJ. I initially worked as a Secretary in the Guidance Office preparing student transcripts. I enrolled in college to become a School Psychologist in 1998; I eventually graduated from Kean University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. I worked as a High School transition counselor and coach for students with special needs. The work was rewarding and helping students define their strengths, deficits, and accomplishments prepared them to complete the college application process. Finally, I completed my graduate studies at Rutgers University, NJ. I am still working with students to help them achieve their goals as a mentor and consultant.
English is the combination of vocabulary, grammar, writing, and pronunciation used to convey a written or verbal message. Once a student has mastered English it will help with academic success in other subjects. English students will be asked to define, use, and write words and sentences in order to develop a proper English paragraph structure. When giving oral presentations students may need adequate training in pronunciation of English words to reach their intended audience. After a student has successfully executed an exemplary English writing project, additional mastery can be supported by reading and writing journals.
Grammar, simply put, is the rule of composition and language. Additionally, grammar is the manner in which a reader, writer, or speaker uses words so that they are comprehensible. In teaching grammar, the lessons are usually strict and consistent, so that the new learner will be able to convey a sensible message. Grammar books are used so that a student can refer to the rules when they are doubtful regarding proper usage. Instructors and tutors try to correct grammar mistakes immediately so that grammar memory becomes automatic.
Literature can be a literally amazing tool to reinforce your reading, English and grammar skills. Reading is fundamental but truly understanding what you read makes it fun. Poets, authors, and playwrights have developed stories into literary masterpieces by using the sum of the parts to create the student's goal of using what they learned. Students can benefit from understanding the differences between non-fiction, fiction, essay, and autobiographical prose. Important literature was published during The Renaissance, Middle Ages, and Old English historical periods.
Microsoft Word is word-processing software that can replace the traditional typewriting process. The benefits of using Microsoft Word is that it eliminates the hassle of ribbons, correction-fluid, and wasted paper, usually experienced with the typewriting process. The program also allows the user to generate a successfully published document with the help of desktop publishing aids such as spelling/grammar check, font design, margin and paragraph defining, and table/chart insertion. Templates are probably the most appreciated part of Microsoft Word; documents are already formatted for immediate use. New learners can navigate Microsoft Word with the help or wizard option and develop a complete document within minutes.
Reading and writing are the fundamentals of education. Children can be instructed in whole language and phonics techniques. New learners can gain success through a reading plan uniquely designed to increase areas of deficiency. If the obstacle is a learning impairment or self-esteem, counseling and family support will help with the reading process.
Besides living and studying in urban, suburban, rural, and international cultures, I have taken several classes in sociology that address social structure, social actions, and social research. The foundation of my Bachelor's Degree is Social Work and the core course requires that we integrate human behavior and social environment (HBSE) into our work. Finally, I have a Master's Degree in Social Work that expands my sociology research and understanding to an advanced level. Students will benefit from the study techniques that I used to receive outstanding scores in sociology.
Writing begins with basic sentence structure. One sentence leads to the next. Novice writers will have to develop their writing skills by continuing to write. Journaling is a good way to exercise your writing skills. Each author has a unique voice that is translated into words, sentences and paragraphs. Another important writing step is to understand the intended audience. Expository, demonstrative, and research writing, are types of writing styles that are used frequently in high school and college settings. Familiarity with outlines can help writers organize their thoughts so that the completed composition can have meaning and flow to their audience. Good writing skill development can be enhanced through reading, researching, and writer persistence.
