I’m Fred! I graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s degree in History and significant English course work. Though I had been very interested in History and current events since elementary school, it wasn’t until college that I developed a deep appreciation and passion for it. My professors had a way of bringing History alive and showing how vibrant and exciting it was. Because they were so enthused about the subject matter, they were always available whenever I needed extra help or clarifications. I try to bring this sense of excitement into all my dealings with students.
I have one year of ESL adult tutoring experience; I am helping a student with her grammar, confidence in speaking, and vocabulary. We routinely engage in situational role-playing, which keeps the lessons lively. As a reading assistant for several years at the local elementary school I helped students with their diction and comprehension. During my career as a publisher I created classroom exercises and used them to teach students about famous Americans from the past and present. Whenever possible we would “go back in time” and each of the students would get to play the part of a famous American. My teaching techniques are always focused on creating and following fun and energizing lesson plans, and encouraging student participation. I am passionate about helping students. I love to see and be part of that moment when the student fully understands new concepts being shared.
I am certified by the National Tutoring Association as a private tutor. Additionally, as a result of scoring in the top 15% of all test takers on the Praxis Series test, "Social Studies: Content Knowledge," I received an Educational Testing Service (ETS) Recognition of Excellence in July 2018.
I am easy to reach and great about taking suggestions and following up with responses to students and their parents. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
