I’m a physics PhD candidate and college instructor with over ten years of experience tutoring and teaching physics, math, and programming. I love working through challenging concepts with students from all backgrounds, and in some cases we can work to overcome mental barriers and better see how powerful physics and math can be. Whether you want to deepen understanding, strengthen intuition, improve problem-solving or test-taking skills, build confidence, or raise your grades, I’d be happy to see if I can help you reach your goals.

I earned my BS and MS in physics (from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Washington) and am completing my PhD in computational biophysics. I’ve taught Physics I at Catawba Valley Community College, served as Head TA for introductory physics at UW, and earned a departmental teaching award for supporting student learning.

My teaching style is interactive, visual, and focused on reasoning. I believe verbalizing your understanding and getting feedback is often more effective than passively listening. I encourage students to take the lead—to draw on Zoom whiteboards and think out loud, explain their understanding of the setup, follow through on their ideas, and use intuition to check whether their answers make sense. I fill in gaps in knowledge, demonstrate problem-setup, problem-solving, and answer-checking strategies, and bring in outside resources when they’re helpful.

Calculus

Calculus

I tutor high school calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, and college Calculus I, II, and III. My approach is visual and reasoning-focused, helping students build strong intuition for limits, derivatives, integrals, and series, and understand how calculus connects to real problems in math, physics, and other sciences. I have over ten years of experience tutoring math through advanced levels and teaching college-level physics. Topics include limits and continuity, derivatives, graph analysis, optimization, related rates, integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, sequences and series, Taylor expansions, parametric and polar calculus, differential equations, and multivariable topics such as partial derivatives and gradients (as covered in standard Calc III courses). For college classes, please share your syllabus or textbook so I can confirm alignment with your course.
Physics

Physics

I tutor physics from high school through graduate level (note: I can help with thermodynamics and fluid dynamics *if part of a physics course*, and NOT if your course has an engineering course number). I majored in physics at Carnegie Mellon, am a physics PhD candidate at the University of Washington, and teach college physics. I enjoy helping students deepen understanding, strengthen intuition, build confidence, and improve problem-solving skills. High School, Honors, IB, AP Physics 1 & 2, AP Physics C (Mechanics & E&M), and Intro College Physics: Mechanics, kinematics, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, oscillations, waves, electricity and magnetism, circuits, optics, and modern physics. Upper-Level Undergraduate & Graduate Physics: Classical Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Thermal Physics, and other modern physics topics. For advanced courses, please share your syllabus or textbook so I can confirm whether I can help. Biophysics & Physical Chemistry: I tutor physics-based coursework in these areas at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Since course content varies widely, please provide the specific material or questions you’d like to work on together.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I tutor precalculus at the high school, honors, AP, and college levels. My teaching style is visual and focused on reasoning, helping students develop a strong foundation in functions, algebraic fluency, trigonometry, and analytical thinking so they feel confident moving into calculus or physics. I have over ten years of experience tutoring math through advanced levels and teaching college-level physics. Topics include functions and transformations, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions and identities, inverse trig, complex numbers, vectors, systems of equations, parametric and polar functions, sequences and series, and introductory limits. Sessions are tailored to your course materials and learning goals.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I tutor trigonometry at the high school, honors, and college levels. My approach is visual and focused on reasoning, helping students build strong geometric intuition, understand how trig functions behave, and develop confidence applying trigonometry in algebra, calculus, and physics. I have over ten years of experience tutoring math and teaching college-level physics. Topics include the unit circle, radians, right-triangle trigonometry, trigonometric functions and identities, inverse trig, graph transformations, solving trig equations, laws of sines and cosines, vectors, and applications to motion, oscillations, and waves. Sessions are tailored to your course materials and learning goals.

10/10 tutor for visual learners :)

I started tutoring with Yasmene after getting a 47% on my first physics exam, and thanks to her, I finished the class with an A! She was incredible at helping me visualize concepts in a way that finally made sense. As a visual learner, that made all the difference. She explained things clearly, patiently, and always found new ways to approach problems until I got it. If you're struggling with physics or just want to really understand the material, I can’t recommend Yasmene enough!

Amazing tutor for Algebra Based Physics in College!

Yasmene was such a great tutor, she really helped me understand the concepts. She was very patient and funny which made the sessions more enjoyable. I really liked that she used a collaborative whiteboard, it made it very useful to store all of my work on there. I can't recommend her enough!

knowledgeable and patient and encouraging

She reviewed with my son, work that he struggled with. Listened and had him explain the process. Gave pointers on the test taking and working through difficult problems. She helped give us an understanding of where our son is at and the process for learning in these higher level classes.

Introduction and review of subject matter.

Yasmene did a terrific job of meeting with my daughter, speaking with her in order to understand her needs to learn her physics subject matter. Yasmene is extremely friendly and professional and took the time to listen to my daughter's concerns as to what she needed to get from her tutor sessions. Yasmeme's teaching style is excellent and explains the subject matter in a way that full understanding is quickly reached. My daughter was able to carry on with her work assignment to full completion after the lesson. We are very happy that we have found Yasmene and are looking to her next lesson.

Yasmene is Great!

My daughter has been struggling with college Quantum Physics and is really getting a lot out of her sessions with Yasmene! They work out problems together and my daughter is able to then transfer skills she learned to work on her own.

Knowledgeable and very helpful

Yasmeen was so helpful to my daughter with her summer honors physics packet. She was even kind enough to answer a question after the class We will use her again during the school year.

Wonderful physics tutor!

Yasmene is the sweetest! Very smart and does a great job breaking down some really difficult concepts into simple terms. She got me through a very fast paced 5 week physics 2 course and was patient, funny, and great at helping me tackle conceptual and mathematical problems to help me keep up. She will make you feel a lot more confident with your physics knowledge even after 1 lesson!
