I have over a decade of experience tutoring and teaching math through advanced* undergraduate level. My students and clients have consistently praised my patience and clarity. While a mathematics lecturer and TA at the University of Maryland, I received a Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence and a plethora of glowing student evaluations. As instructor and course designer for Duke TIP, I taught an intensive summer enrichment program for high school students on the mathematics of voting systems.

My approach is to help build strong intuition and understanding alongside computational proficiency. With a solid conceptual framework, you will memorize less yet be more prepared to tackle a wide array of problems, including ones you haven't seen before. This is a crucial skill for exams and, more importantly, problem-solving in the real world. If you want someone who emphasizes memorizing formulas, look elsewhere!

In contrast to many instructors, I understand what it's like to struggle with or be disinterested in math. I never would have imagined I would get involved in research or graduate studies in math, but I discovered an incredibly rich and varied discipline with exciting applications everywhere you look. (For example, the mathematical foundations of LLMs/generative AI/supervised machine learning are essentially applications of multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and probability.) I can't promise that you'll fall in love with the subject the way I did, but most of my clients come away with a sense that they've learned something valuable and with a deeper understanding than they would have attained on their own.

*If you need assistance with more advanced topics than those listed on my profile, just ask. There's a good chance I'll be able to help, and I'll be honest when I can't. I have helped math majors and both undergraduate and graduate students in STEM disciplines on a range of topics, including real analysis, complex analysis, abstract algebra, theory of computation, and introduction to proofs.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I taught all levels of Calculus as a lecturer and TA at the University of Maryland on multiple occasions and was awarded a departmental Gold Medal in Teaching Excellence for my calculus instruction. My background in the theoretical underpinnings is very strong; I have had approximately 10 different courses in real and complex analysis at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and taught Introduction to Real Analysis at the University of Maryland. I have extensive experience tutoring calculus, real analysis, and complex analysis.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I taught Ordinary Differential Equations as a lecturer at the University of Maryland and received glowing student evaluations. Additionally, I have taken courses in the subject at both undergraduate and graduate levels. I have tutored this course many times. However, I am not well versed in the theory of partial differential equations.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I taught an introduction to mathematical proofs course, which is similar in content to discrete mathematics, at the University of Maryland. I have also taken multiple college level courses on discrete mathematics and related subjects (including theory of computation, mathematical logic, set theory, combinatorics, Boolean algebra, and digital design) and have tutored the subject on many occasions. In particular, I have extensive experience tutoring theory of computation (finite automata, regular expressions, context free grammars, Turing machines, etc), a subject with fewer qualified tutors than most. However, I am not an expert in advanced material on graph theory and combinatorics.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is one of my favorite subjects and one I work especially hard to instill the intuition that is so difficult to develop during a first exposure. I can help with both elementary courses focusing on matrix computations and more advanced theoretical courses. I have also helped professionals studying independently to enhance their understanding of applications like machine learning. While a graduate student at University of Maryland, I was a TA for linear algebra and passed a PhD qualifying exam in abstract algebra (for which linear algebra was a major component). As an undergraduate, I had three semesters of coursework in linear algebra at UNCG and was involved in original research on the subject at an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the College of William & Mary; I received the "Best Student Paper Award" for the resulting research report "Linear Interpolation by P-matrices" at the SCRA/FIM XIII Conference on Interdisciplinary Mathematics at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, Portugal.
Logic

Logic

I have taken multiple courses in mathematical logic, theory of computation, model theory, set theory, Boolean algebra, and digital design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at University of Maryland, UNCG, and NC State. Additionally, I passed a PhD qualifying exam in the subject.
Probability

Probability

I have taken rigorous courses in probability and measure theory (the theoretical foundation of modern probability theory). I have also passed the Society Of Actuaries Exam P on this subject.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

My background in the theoretical underpinnings of analysis is very strong; I have had approximately 10 different courses in real and complex analysis at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and taught Introduction to Real Analysis at the University of Maryland. I have extensive experience tutoring calculus, real analysis, and complex analysis. I do not have much background in numerical analysis or other areas of applied mathematics.

Great tutor that makes any subject easy and interesting!

Christian helped me in my discrete structures class (CS250) and I don't know how I would have done it without him. He was knowledgeable and able to handle anything that came up with ease, but more importantly, he presented the material in a way that made me understand any concept quickly. To top it off, he has a way of keeping people engaged that really helped when the material was especially difficult. I often found that I would come home from class convinced that the day's lecture was on something extremely difficult, and after spending even a small amount of time with Christian the material seemed effortless.

Efficient and organized.

Christian helped my daughter with AP Calculus BC. She found his lessons to be very efficient and engaging, and so they were able to cover a lot of material in a short time during finals review. We are very grateful for his efforts!

Knowledgeable and helpful, excellent attitude

We worked together for proofs and complex analysis. It is clear that he is very knowledgeable about the topic and he was able to clear all of my doubts. It is always a pleasure to work with him and he has definitely improved my understanding of these complex topics. Would definitely recommend.

Great at slowly walking me through concepts in real analysis.

We reviewed convergence, epsilon N definition of convergence, bike toons between infinite sets, and various proofs. He was extremely helpful and I highly recommend him!

Great teacher!

I was struggling with my class and had difficulty understanding the material. Christian quickly helped me grasp the concepts, enabling me to solve the problems on my own in a short period of time. He worked at my pace, explained the details clearly, and immediately identified my specific challenges, adjusting his teaching style to address my concerns effectively.

Great Discrete Math tutor

Christian is a great and patient tutor. Always explains things in better ways than normal solutions show. Always effective sessions. He has helped me grasp material at a much higher level every time we’ve worked together. Highly recommend!

Incredible, knowledgeable tutor!

Christian was able to explain complex concepts in linear algebra to my daughter. He was patient and found ways to explain even when she didn’t get it the first time. After 3-4 sessions, they were able to get through 2 units! She got a 95 the highest she’s gotten on the linear algebra test she was studying for. He thoroughly prepares for each session and he’s truly an amazing teacher. Highly recommend!

Knowledgeable, patient, crystal clear

Sooooo amazing! He will help you understand the essence of the problem. He is patient and will walk you through each step or explain wherever you have problem understanding.

In 1 hour it all became clear!

Reluctant to get any tutoring, my son in Junior HS had a big smile on his face after his first session. He said that now he understands how to solve the problems in the scope of his session in Calculus AP and that Christian was very good at it.

Amazing math tutor!

Christian is an excellent teacher, and helped me a lot. I was struggling in Calculus before I started working with him, but with his helped I managed to do well! I'm not a big fan of math but in our tutoring sessions Christian helped me to really understand the concepts. He was able to teach things in a way that made sense to me, and I can't thank him enough!
