Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My PhD in Comparative and International Education involves application of social science methodology to the field of education in its broadest sense, e.g., my dissertation was a study of politics and educational reform efforts in Chile under three successive regimes. I have taught university-level courses with anthropological and sociological content and methods (e.g., "Children and Urban Poverty"), as well as courses in advanced research methodology for the social sciences.

College Counseling

I hold a PhD in Education, have taught and advised students at the university level for over 25 years, served as a graduate admissions chair for 10+ years, have worked with both graduate and undergraduate students on theses and dissertations, have tutored high school students who are preparing college admissions applications (including statements of purpose). I have also worked with families seeking counseling on college admissions (appropriate college choices, financial aid, etc.).

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a doctorate in education and have a special interest in pre-K and elementary education. I have worked with students at all levels, but have specifically tutored elementary school-age children (in reading and language arts). I also co-founded a non-profit organization that addresses the educational needs of under-served children beginning in pre-K.

Public Speaking

My credentials in public speaking include 25+ years of university lectures as well as workshops in public speaking, training in dramatic arts, and 5 years of improvisational comedy.
