My 5-star rating is built on excellent education and extensive experience in both Spanish and Music. Raised by my mother, a Spanish teacher, I have a B.A. in Spanish and spent my junior year in Spain. I maintain near-native fluency through travel, various bilingual positions, and friendships with native Spanish speakers from several countries. My two Music degree programs included excellent teaching methods courses and professional performing experiences. As a choral director and private music teacher, I train students of all levels of ability.

In over 5,200 hours of tutoring both subjects for nearly 11 years, I have honed the ability to explain concepts clearly and sequentially while making the learning experience enjoyable and personalized to the individual's interests, goals, and learning style. In every lesson review, I provide links to online resources related to that lesson. Students describe me as knowledgeable, patient, encouraging, and "the best." They feel free to ask questions in a non-intimidating setting, excelling beyond their expectations. Both struggling and motivated high school and college students improve their skills, confidence, and grades. In Medical Spanish, medical professionals are equipped to directly communicate with patients. I am fully bilingual in English and Spanish and have also studied other Romance languages, enabling me to make comparisons for students with prior experience in those languages.

Music Theory can be an intimidating subject for many gifted, artistic musicians. I proceed systematically, encouraging the student and relating concepts to familiar music. My knowledge of the voice is valuable in enabling Ear Training students to reproduce the tones they hear. In Music History, we compare trends in art, architecture, and culture of the period and look at the biographical information on composers, their influencers, and their contributions to style trends.

It would be my joy to share my love and knowledge of Spanish and Music with you!

Ear Training

Ear Training

I have Masters and Bachelors degrees in Music. Coursework included four semesters of ear training/sight singing (using moveable do). My years of choral directing helped me to have a highly developed ear for intonation, tuning, and pitch. I have taught groups in schools and churches, in addition to teaching college courses and private voice and piano students. One of my WyzAnt Music Theory/Ear Training students was accepted into Berklee College of Music.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am a native speaker of English, a lifelong language learner, and an experienced teacher, specializing in intermediate to advanced ESL/EFL students. We can tailor the lessons to your needs, such as conversation practice, pronunciation, or writing. For vocabulary-building, I use the strategies of "word families," words that are related in meaning but are different parts of speech, and, "cognate words," words that share a common Latin root, especially helpful for native speakers of Romance languages. I took courses in English grammar, diction, and phonetics, am fluent in Spanish, and have studied Latin, French, Portuguese, and most recently, Catalan.
General Music

General Music

My broad and extensive musical career began with an excellent foundation of classical training. My education prepared me to teach people of all ages and levels of ability. I have taught volunteers in churches and communities as well as middle/high school music and college courses in music appreciation. I have also taught voice and piano privately for many years. One of my specialties is to make music approachable and understandable to amateurs and music lovers.
Music History

Music History

I have Masters and Bachelors degrees in Music. Course work included four semesters of Music History: Renaissance to Baroque; Classical; Romantic; and Twentieth Century and two semesters of Choral Literature, spanning about 500 years. I taught two semesters of Introduction to Music Appreciation and a music history survey course at the Community College of RI.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I have a Masters and Bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) in Music, both from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. I have many years of experience as a teacher and director. I have taught private piano lessons for several years, in which I incorporate music theory into every lesson.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

I have Masters and Bachelors of Music degrees. Coursework included four semesters of sight-singing and ear training. I was trained in "moveable do," and I also use the numbers of the scale. As a choral director for many years, I have helped individuals and groups learn how to sightread new music through interval recognition, coupled with an understanding of where a particular note fits into the context of the chord.
Spanish

Spanish

Having tutored all levels of Spanish for many years, I am very familiar with the points of grammar that give students the most trouble. I help students to build their confidence in learning the language by tapping into their learning styles and by my personable and encouraging approach. It is also a joy to share my love of the language with other adults for their personal or professional needs. My bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature included a year abroad in Madrid, Spain, where I developed near-native fluency that I have maintained throughout my life.

Wonderful tutor!

My daughter has had a great experience with Elizabeth! She really enjoys her tutoring sessions and has found them so helpful for Spanish 3. We’ll be recommending her to everyone we know :)

Tutor responded:

This student and I made a great connection because, while I was supporting her in Spanish 3, her favorite class is orchestra! As fellow musicians who also happen to share a birthday, we had much to converse about (in Spanish, of course!)

Wonderful tutor

I worked with Elizabeth each week this summer in preparation for the praxis teaching licensure test. She was wonderful and always asked if there was anything specific I wanted to go over. She provided me with all kinds of study resources along the way. 5 stars to Elizabeth.

Tutor responded:

This student was preparing to take the Praxis test to become a certified Music teacher. This test includes music history questions, including listening examples, music theory, pedagogy, administration, and vocal and instrumental technique. It's a lot! We primarily focused on a thorough Music History review from the Middle Ages to the present.

Great Spanish tutor!

Elizabeth helped my daughter with her Spanish III class. Made a huge difference. She taught my daughter tenses as well as subjunctive. She is also extremely sweet and patient. My daughter loves working with her.

I have also supported this student in Spanish 4 this year. I just heard from her mom that our student finished with an A in the course! She will be going on to AP Spanish, and I look forward to our continued work together.

Amazing and wonderful Spanish tutor

Elizabeth was *wonderful* to work with! I am a college sophomore and I was taking Spanish for the first time and was very nervous. I am so grateful to her for all of her work with me. She explained everything so clearly and was able to give me helpful tips and tricks for how to remember grammar or pronunciation rules. It was so helpful and I did really well in my class thanks to her help!!!

Great Spanish Tutor

My daughter was struggling with Spanish one after entering mid semester. Elizabeth is knowledgeable, patient and really great at connecting with my shy student. Hour long sessions fly by and my student is retaining the information.

Excellent last minute help

My daughter needed last minute help to study for a Spanish 2 test. Elizabeth was very helpful and walked my daughter through the content. My daughter ended up scoring 93 on her test while many other students in the class didn’t do as well. Thank you for the extra help!
