Hello, and welcome to Corey L. Tutoring.

I believe that everyone has the potential to accomplish great feats and do their part to make the world a better place. Often, we face challenging obstacles that we struggle to overcome alone. I’m here to help people triumph over their challenges and achieve their goals.

How I Help

When I tutor, my job goes beyond helping a student pass a test.

Every topic we learn, we review and build on the fundamentals that came before. Many students today are victims of a test-obsessed education system that teaches them how to pass their next test, but not how to understand and apply the material to future lessons. As a result, many students start to struggle with subjects they once enjoyed, and they can’t figure out why. Often, the student actually understands the current material, but struggles because of simple mistakes from concepts they were supposedly taught long before. Instead, my students and I rebuild the fundamentals alongside their new topics. As a result, we don’t just ace the test; we revitalize the student’s confidence.

Every topic we learn, we also practice skill of learning. Learning should be a life-long pursuit, yet our education system never explicitly teaches students how to learn. When I tutor, “How to Learn” is the most important skill I teach. Every lesson, we go beyond how to solve questions on a test; we practice thought experiments and abstract reasoning, and we connect the current concept to principles from past lessons and “sneak peeks” of future material. When I do my job, we create a self-sufficient learner who no longer needs me. That’s my definition of success.

I recently checked-in with a former student’s mother, just to ask how he was. I did not ask for feedback, but I got the following response:

“Tristan does really well. He just started his junior year [in college]. Time is really whizzing by! Currently a cumulative GPA of 3.989. I strongly believe the reason he does so well (other than working hard, which he does) is due to your help at the

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I believe Math is the most important subject for a young student. Beyond setting the groundwork for more advanced math later, it teaches the problem-solving and pattern recognition techniques that every subject needs. As a result, I believe a tutor should focus on the underlying problems and patters in the math rather than the rote memorization that will only help the student pass their next quiz.

English

English,

English

I have two undergraduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, with one semester of Writing Seminar included in the curriculum (passed with an A-). I also scored 740 and 680 on the SAT Writing and Reading sections, respectively, while in high school. I'm particularly well-suited to teaching grammar, since fluent command of German requires mastery of grammar concepts we tend to take for granted in English.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra represents a fundamental transition and new way of thinking for every math student. Many students, myself included, needed some help making that transition, but once it's made the subject can be surprisingly easy. I think it's my job to help the student understand how to think so eventually, they learn the material on their own with ease.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I took Algebra II (Honors) in my freshman year of high school and passed with high marks. I've also had a lot of practice since then, since I faced a lot of algebra-intense problems in the physics and engineering classes I took at UPenn.
Calculus,

Calculus

I took two years of calculus as a high school student and another 3 semesters in college. I struggled with calculus for a while before it "clicked" and I started to understand it intuitively. I've also had a lot of practice sharing that understanding with my peers. I think Calculus is when a student truly starts to understand how elegant math can be.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I studied Chemistry in my Sophomore year of high school, and I had one of those teachers that changes your life. I took AP Chemistry in my junior year, passed the AP exam with a 5 (highest score). I also qualified for the National Chemistry Olympiad at the state level twice (top twelve high school chemistry students in the state). I went on to study Chemical Engineering at an Ivy League school. I've also tutored Chemistry before at the request of my high school chemistry teacher.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I took Prealgebra in 6th grade. Though I'd always been a strong math student, I struggled with the transition to the higher level concepts. I overcame that lack of intuitive understanding, however, and went on to a fruitful study of mathematics up through six semesters of calculus. I believe I can help a struggling student make the transition from arithmetic to higher mathematical concepts.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus may be the most important year of math high school students take. As an engineering graduate, commanding calculus was critical for my education. However, I saw many intelligent peers struggle with math not because they couldn't understand the calculus, but because they lacked strong precalculus fundamentals. I believe that once students establish that strong base in precalculus and learn to apply it to the more complex concepts, they tend to succeed in precalculus and beyond.

Brilliant and amazing tutor!

Corey has been the best tutor I've ever had in my life! His explanations supersede those of many of my professors as he makes "difficult" concepts easily digestible.

Knowledgeable Tutor (lifesaver!)

My daughter, a college student, is a (soon-to-be) Accounting major. Due to the pandemic, all her classes are online & she is struggling in accounting. She told me that her tutoring sessions with Corey have been so helpful. Thank you, Corey!

Kimio, 12 lessons with Corey

Knowledgeable and confidence instilling

He did a great job of helping Gracen with test taking tips and instilling confidence in her. He was extremely encouraging and gave her logical and easy steps to help her work through the problems more efficiently.

Worked well with my son

Corey helped my son gain a solid foundation in Pre-Calculus. He helped my son understand the concepts and then how to apply them. My son respected Corey for his clear mastery of the subject and was motivated by his high standard. We will definitely use Corey again!

Knowledgeable and professional tutor

This week, we worked through Chapter 2 on alkanes: their nomenclature, their properties, and their structural and conformational isomers. There's a lot of material, but we're keeping a good pace.

Extremely talented and patient!

My son was very nervous about being able to comprehend AP Physics and do well in it. He started thinking whether he made the right decision by having AP Physics as one of his courses. Corey changed it just in a day. Just after one lesson my son was much more confident and ready to take it on. Excellent!
