Hi! My name is Kevin (or, if you prefer formality, you can call me Mr. B), and I've been tutoring students of all ages and abilities for roughly 15 years. My primary focus is STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), but I also help students succeed in computer programming and in test prep (ACT/SAT/GRE). I believe that, with the right support and attitude, anyone can learn to do anything! My students validate this belief every day.

I began tutoring when I was getting my degree in mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman (Terre Haute, IN), which was and still is the top-ranked undergraduate program in the country. I lived in a sophomore dorm and provided support to students of all majors. This experience propelled me into education, as I founded my own tutoring business a few years after college. I have done several years of graduate research at Purdue University (W. Lafayette, IN) and have run SAT prep programs at a Sylvan learning center. I have taught classes to elementary school, middle school, and college students, most recently as a member of the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). I have over a thousand hours of experience in most of the subjects I tutor, and I'm constantly pushing to improve. Whether you're a high school student struggling with math for the first time, a college student trying to run the gauntlet of engineering classes, or an adult learner looking to brush up on concepts you've forgotten, I can help you succeed!

WashU students: I live next to campus and am able to meet you anywhere on the main campus or the south 40 very easily, but be aware that I do not tutor for courses where I have a direct conflict of interest, such as those I or my partner, Dr. B, are currently teaching.

AutoCAD,

AutoCAD

I have been using various CAD and solid modeling programs for the past nine years, including AutoCAD, FreeCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, and CATIA. Most of my work in these programs is geared towards drafting engineering drawings. I have many years' experience helping others learn to use CAD software as well as troubleshoot issues in existing drawings.
C,

C

I have eight years' experience coding in C. I have taken several courses that use extensive C programming (microchip programming, numerical solvers). I have some experience tutoring people in programming in a formal setting, but most of my experience is informal (e.g., helping coworkers with their code). When tutoring programming in general, my strategy is to teach the student the logic behind the structure and how to use references effectively. Rarely is route learning employed or encouraged.
C++,

C++

I have five years' experience in C++ programming, mostly with numerical solvers. I have taken courses that employ C++ to solve problems in fluid mechanics, granular flows, and general engineering problems. I also have experiencing debugging and troubleshooting large C++ programs used by the modeling community.
Computer Programming,

Computer Programming

I have over a decade's worth of experience in computer programming, including code development, debugging, maintenance, and teaching. Languages with which I'm familiar include (but are not limited to) C/C++, MATLAB, FORTRAN, and Java. Most of my programming experience is related to numerical methods (e.g., computational fluid dynamics), and I have tutored students in many different programming languages for engineering courses.
Linux,

Linux

I am an active Linux user and have been since 2007. I have experience in many of the popular Linux flavors (e.g., Ubuntu and Red Hat) as well as a number of niche varieties. I have experience with remote computing in a Linux environment and have written short guides on the subject. If you're looking for someone to help you understand Linux, particularly the command line, I'm both passionate about the subject and have practical experience. I am a mechanical engineer by training who has been tutoring for decades and has done research in computational modeling.
MATLAB,

Knowledgeable and helpful tutor!

Kevin did a terrific job tutoring our son in geometry. He was patient, knowledgeable, and helpful! Our child is a freshman in high school and needed some additional help navigating a few concepts and foundational topics; Kevin quickly assessed his needs and provided solid guidance. Our son did well on his test and is more confident.

Repeat customer!

Kevin helped my older daughter with her more advanced college math and science courses this summer. He was so helpful, we asked him to help our younger daughter with her first math course at community college. Kevin connects well with the kids and they look forward to their time with Kevin. He is able to explain things in an easy to understand method which they appreciate. He is prompt and uses their time well. He is even helping my daughter check and make sure she has completed all her assignments in her non math courses and helping her stay organized.

Kevin is a Godsend!

My daughter met with Kevin twice a week this summer to help with two distance learning classes she was taking. University Physics 2 for engineers was remote and asynchronous. Kevin helped her not only understand the material, but stay on pace with the class and stay on top of her assignments. He is always prompt and easy to make a regular schedule with. He provides good feedback after each lesson. He has helped her stay on track and have success this summer.
