Hi, my name is Wes. I am a full-time district employed PreK–12 substitute teacher with a strong academic and professional background in the life sciences. I hold my degree in Plant Breeding, Biology, Biotechnology, and Business Management, which allow me to combine deep scientific knowledge with clear, structured instruction.
Prior to teaching, I worked in academia as a plant geneticist at the International Center for Crop Genetics and Genomics. This experience gives me advanced subject-matter expertise and real-world context in biology, environmental science, genetics, and botany, which I bring into my tutoring to help students better understand how science applies beyond the classroom.
I have instructional experience with students of all age levels and learning needs, both in classroom settings and in one-on-one support roles. As a substitute teacher, I regularly adapt to different curricula, grade levels, and learning environments, which has strengthened my ability to quickly assess student understanding and adjust instruction accordingly.
My teaching style is student-centered and flexible. I use a combination of targeted assistance and engagement strategies based on how each individual learns best. I rely on diagnostic assessment techniques to identify problem areas and focus instruction where students need it most, helping them build confidence and long-term understanding rather than relying on memorization.
I am genuinely passionate about science, and I’m determined to make learning it enjoyable. I believe students learn best when they’re engaged, curious, and confident, so I focus on building a positive learning environment where questions are encouraged and discovery is part of the process.
I am comfortable tutoring middle school, high school, AP-level, and introductory college-level courses in biology, botany, and environmental science, and I enjoy helping all students develop strong foundational skills and scientific reasoning.
