Hi! I'm Emily. I've edited in academic and corporate environments - I'm excited to see how I can help you!
From grad school to greeting cards I've developed a keen ability to analyze and synthesize - whether it's examining long, complicated works of literature or short, sentimental messages, my education and my work have taught me the valuable skills needed to absorb important inputs and apply my own insight to create a quality result.
I have spent over 20 years editing greeting cards at Hallmark Cards where I work with writers and editors to refine messages and sentiments; we also write strategies and prompts for our writing staff. In my work I've had many opportunities to train and educate interns and new employees in our writing and editorial community. I have also been invited to speak about my work to a college level editing practicum class at one of my alma maters. I have a BA in English from Southern Nazarene University and an MFA in English Language and Literature with an emphasis on Rhetoric from the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
In 2018 I received a prestigious award at Hallmark granting me a 6-month sabbatical which I spent researching the transformative power of children's literature and the magic of picture books. Through academic research, personal interviews, travel and exploration, I turned my work into a 12-episode podcast which I wrote and produced. One of the many important opportunities that came from that sabbatical was a greater understanding of neurodivergence which I have been researching diligently ever since my child was diagnosed with ADHD. This has given me a particular insight into the challenges of executive dysfunction.
From writing a magazine article, a podcast episode, a school paper, a presentation, or a poem to show someone how much they mean, I have many ideas to help you get your best ideas out of your heads and onto paper so that you can put your best foot forward no matter what your writing assignment may be.
