I'm Ellen: book lover, life-long writer, and plant nerd. As a child, I spent hours each day writing stories and poems. In college, I enjoyed writing papers and answering essay questions on tests. I feel so lucky to have a job that I genuinely enjoy. I love helping students build confidence, increase critical thinking skills and learn new things!
I started writing tutoring at the kitchen table where I helped my younger sisters learn how to write. I started formally teaching academic and creative writing in the fall of 2018 at Metropolitan Open School, where I worked as a Language Arts teacher until May 2022. I primarily work with middle and high school students.
I enjoy teaching writing during one-on-one so sessions can be personalized to the student’s skill level and interest. I don't work with a specific curriculum, but instead customize each writing program to the individual student. One unique thing about my sessions is that they almost always include reading! Reading varied texts is one of the best predictors of a student's success in writing. So, we spend some time every session reading and discussing a short story or poem.
I'm so excited to meet your student so that we can work together to build confidence, skills and (hopefully) enjoyment in writing.
