My name is Andy and I want to help you learn to think historically, write well, and enjoy learning and studying history. I graduated from West Point with a degree in European History with additional coursework in Computer Science and a wide variety of other STEM and humanities courses. I went on to earn my Master’s and PhD in History from Columbia University. Since earning my first post-graduate degree I have spent a total of six years instructing History at the college level where I have taught freshman courses as well as higher-level electives on topics such as European History, Middle Eastern History, the History of Religion, and Military History.

Helping students improve their grades and appreciate how studying history can enrich their lives is my main aim for tutoring. As an instructor, I enjoyed helping students in one-on-one sessions to improve their performance in my classes and how good writing could carry over into other subjects as well. Rather than making lessons and tutoring a grind of memorizing dates, names, and places, I start with getting students to ask a big “why” question and then help them build a well-supported and viable answer that creates a historical narrative that the student owns. Students who go through this process give better answers in class, often get higher scores on tests, and write better essays as well. I also helped students apply for scholarships and gave them ideas and methods to prepare for essay tests.

Before our first meeting, I will want to know what time period or event you are interested in exploring in great detail. If you are having trouble with a particular reading assignment let me know in advance so I can be as familiar with the topic and author as possible.

I look forward to helping you in your study of history.

I twice served as the Course Director for History of World Religions at West Point in Fall 2021 and Fall 2022. Approximately half the course was an examination of the "Abrahamic Religions" and their intertwined history. This course was an upper level elective that satisfied graduation requirements for History and Sociology majors as well as the Diversity and Inclusion minor. The course material addressed the role of multiple world religions in the political and social development of society focusing primarily on events in the 19th and the 20th centuries.
European History

European History

My undergraduate degree is in European history. I taught an advanced undergraduate seminar in 20th century European history to prepare history majors to write their senior theses. I taught European History for a semester-long freshman history course.

Writing

Writing

In my six years teaching at the undergraduate level, I helped dozens of students select paper topics, develop thesis statements, find sources for research projects, and revise their prose. I am available to help students with any and all phases of their research projects as well as assist them to improve their answers on essay tests and Discussion Board Questions (DBQs). For editing, I like working with students so they can learn the tools so they can to improve their own writing as well.
