Bio

I have been teaching General Chemistry at the university level for the past 24 years at Saginaw Valley State University, Delta College, Central Michigan University, and Davenport University. I have a daytime job as an analytical chemist at a local company, but my real love in my profession is teaching and tutoring. I love that moment when a student "gets it". I have a daytime job as an analytical chemist at a local company, but my real love in my profession is teaching and tutoring. I love that moment when a student "gets it". I will often use different explanations to drive a point home so that the student can better understand the topics they are struggling with.

I have been tutoring for the past year and students like the fact that I can tie in current concepts with what they have already learned because of the depth of knowledge I have from teaching. Student tutors do a very good job, but often don't have an extensive knowledge base to work from.

I think what makes me an outstanding tutor is the fact that I have been teaching at the university level for over 20 years and I have the ability to connect concepts for better understanding. This along with my enthusiasm for the subject and for teaching in general keeps the tutoring sessions active and beneficial to the student

If you are a General Chemistry student, High School Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, or AP Chemistry student, or are preparing for the SAT Subject Test in Chemistry, I encourage you to contact me with regard to one-on-one tutoring.

Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a PhD in Analytical Chemistry, so I have had a lot of experience with calculations and stoichiometry, which are commonly some of the more difficult concepts for students to understand. I have an excellent rapport with students. I relate to students very well. I have been teaching for 21 years at the University level. I received the Mary H. Anderson Adjunct Faculty Award at SVSU for my ability to help students understand chemistry at their level without "talking over their heads" despite my PhD.

Knowledgeable, patient, and funny!

Stephen has helped me so much with General Chemistry 1 for college! I am taking an accelerated course over the summer for college and he has helped me keep up and even enjoy the class! He is very patient with me and allows for me to asks whatever questions in order to get the concept. He always puts the problems on the whiteboard, which is helpful so I can write along and not have to look at my book and the screen and my notebook all at the same time! I definitely recommend Stephen to anyone needing help with chemistry! I am planning on tutoring with him for General Chemistry 2 as well. He is that good!

Just Fabulous!

Stephen is a phenomenal Chemistry tutor. My son has been struggling with Chemistry all year. Stephen is able to explain concepts in a way that he can truly understand. We have used Stephen a number of times over the past month and I would recommend him to anyone.

Excellent tutor

Stephen was knowledgeable and easy to work with. He accommodated a tight test schedule. Because of the pandemic, my school has virtual online learning with oral chemistry exams. Stephen practiced mock exams with me so I know what to say.

The best kind of teacher

Stephen is well versed in all areas of chemistry. His true gift is his infectious love of the subject and his ability to make what can be esoteric concepts accessible to all different types of learners. I am grateful for him and wish there were more teachers like him.
