Bio

Hey, I'm Katie, nice to meet you! I'm studying secondary English education at Hope College in Holland, MI with the goal to become a middle school language arts teacher. I love teaching and working with young people, so tutoring is an excellent opportunity for both of us to learn new skills.

I graduated high school summa cum laude with four department awards. I have a 1570 SAT (790 EBRW, 780 Math) and received 5's on 7 different AP exams. I love reading and writing most but consider myself...

I love reading and writing most but consider myself well-rounded in all disciplines. I currently hold a 4.0 GPA after 102 college credits.

In addition to my academic achievements, I have served in a wide range of leadership positions, including in high school marching band, NHS, peer-helping programs, and Bible studies. In college, I continue to serve at church as well as in band and orchestra, and I am the tutor development coordinator at my college's writing center. I also have experience as a summer camp counselor. These positions have trained me in the interpersonal skills that help me successfully build relationships with my students. I aim to create a safe space where students can ask all questions and learn at their own pace.

I am in my second year with Wyzant and have worked with students ages 11-17 in a variety of subjects. I can provide peer review, homework support, supplementary instruction, or test preparation. As a full-time student myself balancing other jobs and activities, I am taking on just a few hours of tutoring at a time. However, I am happy to make arrangements to give students the time, resources, and flexibility they need!

I am here for middle school, high school, or college students seeking support with their analytical essays or creative writing assignments, or those who just need someone to do homework or study with to keep them accountable. I would love to connect with you, so feel free to reach out!

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I do not claim to be an expert on the Bible because I am still learning myself, but that's the beauty of reading God's Word is that there is always more He can reveal to us! I am Catholic, a religion minor in college, and an avid listener of Father Mike's Bible In A Year podcast. In addition, I have had leadership roles in my church's youth ministry program, my high school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes program, and my campus's FOCUS mission. I would be happy to help you design a Bible study lesson and practice your presenting skills!
English

English

I have taken two honors courses and two AP courses in English during my high school career, landing me an English department award. I am currently an English education major in college, taking classes in writing and literature. I love to read and write, and I hope to one day become a language arts teacher. Words connect us to each other and can transcend time and space-how cool is that!
Flute

Flute

I was a top flute player at my high school and am now performing in college band and orchestra with a music scholarship. I study under a professor who is the flute principal of the Holland Symphony Orchestra. I have also been a marching band section leader and soloist, worship music volunteer, 10-time Solo & Ensemble performer, and Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra Prep Winds member. I am interested in working with beginner or intermediate players!
Grammar

Grammar

Grammar comes fairly naturally to me and has helped me succeed in my advanced English classes throughout high school and college. I am actually taking an entire class on grammar this fall. I love to read and write, so my experiences have helped me develop a sense of how sentence structure should flow. I would be happy to help you not only fix but also identify and understand your grammar mistakes so that you can gain experience, too!
Literature

Literature

I have always had a love for reading and have taken advanced literature high school courses and college courses. I am familiar with both the AP Lit and AP Lang exams and have read works for class such as Moby Dick, 1984, Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, Alas Babylon, Romeo and Juliet, A Doll's House, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Just Mercy, Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, Night, The Crucible, Women of Brewster Place, the Blind Assassin, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, The History of Mary Prince, Happiness, and the Lie Tree, as well as lots of poetry. I love all different genres!
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a natural writer both inside and outside of the classroom, I have experience with various forms and styles of writing. My friends and peers regularly seek my advice on their essays before turning them in, and I am on the leadership team at the writing center at my college. I've helped students improve their grades by fixing anything from grammar mistakes to analysis. Let me know how I can help you!
Reading

Reading

Reading is one of my favorite things to do! As an English education major, I am learning techniques to improve literacy and broaden my students' horizons with books. If you or your child are looking for someone to read with or work on comprehension and analysis, let me know how I can help you!

SAT Reading

In addition to being an English department award winner and AP Lang & Lit student in high school, as well as being an English education major in college, I performed very well on my SAT and earned 790 points in the Reading and Writing categories. I love writing, both for fun and for academics! I am well-versed in writing styles and grammar and have won creative writing contests. I am familiar with the AP exam rubrics for AP Lang and AP Lit. I am also a leader at my college's writing center. I enjoy writing and can't wait to read some of yours!

Helpful and knowledgeable

Katie has been incredibly accommodating with our schedule,Her flexibility which have relieved a lot of our stress. Beyond her logistical support, she has also been immensely helpful in guiding my son through the various aspects of his project. Her depth of knowledge is impressive, and she explains concepts in a way that is both engaging and easy for him to understand. Additionally, her kindness and patience create a positive learning environment, making my son feel comfortable and encouraged to ask questions. Overall, Katie is not just an excellent teacher; she genuinely cares about her students.
