Qualifications for “GRE”

The key point when discussing study skills is that each subject has study techniques that are unique to it. Studying for spelling is completely different than studying for math or science. I have taught all subjects at the elementary level and have helped all kinds of students with their study skills. I recently tutored a third grade girl who was getting D's and E's in spelling and she improved so much she went to getting all A's. I believe I can help anyone to become a better learner!

Having taught school for over 30 years, I have prepared my students for and administered all types of tests in all subjects. I have successfully taken many tests myself, including the GRE. I find that when taking a test, one must make a plan at the beginning to allot for appropriate time for each segment of the test if it is timed. On tests calling for essay type answers, it is also important to plan, using a short outline of things that must be addressed in the answer. I can also help with strategies for multiple choice, open-ended and fill-in-the-blank types of test items.

Reading Recovery has changed reading instruction for the better all around the English speaking world.

Children begin to feel badly about their school performance when they have difficulty learning to read, write or do math. I understand this and know how to reach your child at a critical time. I believe the teacher's job is to "arrange victories" for the student. This requires careful planning and the results, more confidence and improved grades, lead to overall better scholastic performance. I believe in varying the techniques in each lesson to keep the student interested and engaged.

I have taught classroom elementary level math to K through 6th grade students for over 20 years. I have also taught remedial math for over 15 years to students (K-6th) who had difficulty in math. In addition, I have taught a graduate level math methods class to other teachers of grades K through 8 at Central Michigan University. I have been doing private tutoring for 4 years. When I tutor I like to use a variety of techniques in order to keep the lessons interesting. I also assess each child so I can target the areas where help is most needed. Sometimes parents like "homework" help for their child and I am willing to help with that if the child brings his textbook and assignment.

I know how to help students with the confusion that results from phonics rules that work in some situations, but not all. Fantastic Tutor

I was looking for a reading tutor for my son, who is a first grader struggling with reading and Colleen is such a blessing. I can't believe we are able to work with a retired reading specialist. She is patient and really keys in to his needs. She listens to his interests and customizes his lessons for him. She created the sight word bingo for him which he loves. We love her.

Engaging and committed

We found Ms Colleen to improve our son’s reading abilities as we felt he was a little behind for his grade level after finishing kinder. By the end of summer he was reading at his grade level. Now he is a level 14 (1st grade is levels 3-16) and he has 4 months left of 1st grade. She is able to hold his attention for an entire hour and makes the sessions interactive offering games. My son not only benefits from the sessions but also enjoys them! When we were struggling to help him with new weird math techniques (sad that parents can fail 1st grade math!), Ms Colleen came to the rescue. She researched the technique his school was using and covered both math and reading in his session. We highly appreciate Ms. Colleen's commitment, expertise, and the positive influence she has had on son’s education and wholeheartedly recommend her as a tutor.

Amazing

Colleen was very sweet and patient with Natalie today as she wasn’t feeling well and harder to engage. Natalie came out of the lesson excited about the new game and pleased with her mastery of another word. I love that Colleen was able to meet Natalie’s needs even when Natalie was uncooperative in the beginning.

Our first session

Colleen came prepared to assess our son's level and get a feeling for where we needed to start. She is friendly and professional, and our son enjoyed their time together a lot! We are looking forward to our next sessions and the progress I know she will help us acheive!

Great results

Colleen was just what my daughter needed to prepare for her mid-term exams. As a freshman in high school my daughter was overwhelmed and lacked some basic knowledge and skills to effectively and efficiently study. The result - an A on her most challenging class, World History. Thank you Miss Colleen.

Very patient, and wonderful at connecting with students of many ages.

Colleen has been working with me for a few weeks now and I'm very pleased with the results. My scores have gone up and we're not even done with our sessions yet! She's great at explaining problems and identifying specific types of problems (trends) to focus work on.

Colleen is a very patient and respectful tutor. She allows my son to do his own work and guides him when he stumbles or gets frustrated. Her kindness and encouragement make him want to achieve his goals

Patient & Thorough

My son was severely behind and this school year advanced more than 3 levels which in large part was due to Ms. Colleen. She is extremely patient as my son can be quite fidgety and has the ability to redirect and keep him on task when he is trying to everything but work on reading. He looks forward to his time with her and it has been a pleasure seeing him enjoy reading more and more as he improves while working with Ms. Colleen.

Thank you so much for your review! I appreciate it very much, but I would like to clarify something for you. Your son started on Level 7 and is now Level 14 which is an increase of 7 Reading Recovery or Fountas & Pinnell levels! I am about to try him in Level 15!!

Does a Nice Job

We have been with Colleen for 3 months now and in that time we have seen amazing results in our son. He has struggled with reading from pre-K. In the time we have been with her, she has raised him almost 7 levels in reading. Colleen works very hard to make the lessons interesting and applicable to each child. She even wrote a story for my son, just so he could practice a word he struggled with.

Very warm, patient, set an encouraging environment for the student

Colleen is a wonderful tutor who knows how to create a relaxed environment for the student and the parents. This was the first thing I looked at to make sure the student felt they could be themselves and relax and engage in the learning process. I'm hopeful this will be a positive experience. Colleen is a wonderful resourceful tutor. She zeros in quickly with the student's challenging task at hand and focuses on solutions. The student's grade has gone up 2 letter grades. She has not verbalized how she hates math since the tutoring sessions began. I believe we're on the right track. Lesson was positive in spite of student's apprehension to stay focused. The student has recently received braces. She had a test that day on her saxophone, her mouth was sore and she was tired. Colleen very patiently kept her focused on the math task. The student seemed to feel she accomplished something with the session. I'm pleased with her willingness to continue trying. Very pleased with progress. My student has more confidence to attempt math equations. Excellent team. 01/22/2014 Pleased with progress. 02/12/2014 Still needs a lot of help with math concepts. 02/17/2014 thru 03/03/2014 Colleen has always been on time. She always brings material for my granddaughter to work on. If she has class assignments, Colleen works with her in those areas. She always gives me feedback if time permits before her next student. I am very pleased with teacher and pleased with students progress. 03/17/2014 Class went well, student improving, very pleased with tutor and how she is so attentive to student. I feel money was well spent. We have to conclude sessions at this time, but I would not hesitate to seek Colleen in the future if needed.
