Greetings, my name is Andrew, and I am a certified Educational Technician, Level III. I have enjoyed working as a teaching assistant and a tutor for over ten years, the latter full-time since 2014. My specialty is standardized tests. Greetings, my name is Andrew, and I am a certified Educational Technician, Level III. I have enjoyed working as a teaching assistant and a tutor for over ten years, the latter full-time since 2014. My specialty is standardized tests. Not only have I achieved near-perfect 99th-percentile scores on multiple tests, but I have also invested thousands of hours into helping prepare students to succeed on everything from high school-level tests (ACT, SAT, ACCUPLACER, ASVAB) to graduate-level tests (GRE, GMAT, and LSAT). If there is a problem to be cracked, I jump at the opportunity, and whether I share my thoughts with one person, a study group, or a classroom full of students, I am eager to bounce those ideas off my audience and see what their own thoughts may be. One of the most vital skills that I have developed as a tutor is that it is important to listen. In this manner, we solve problems together, reinforcing tried-and-true study methods and test-specific techniques. Simply stated, after logging thousands of hours both through and independently of this platform, I have come to know what works and what does not.

My students have gained admission to some of the most selective high schools (e.g., Thomas Jefferson), colleges (Ivy League schools), and graduate schools (Harvard, Wharton, Booth), and several have earned National Merit recognition. I hope I may have the opportunity to work with you or someone you know who needs help. You will find that I am professional, courteous, and, dare I say, someone who can even turn a dreaded subject into a towering triumph. There is nothing more rewarding for me as a tutor.

The following represent the top scores to date that my students have achieved on their respective tests.

ACT - 36/36 (0 missed questions)
PSAT - 1510/1520
SAT - 1590/1600
GRE - 337/340
GMAT - 780/800

ACT English

ACT English

The first time I took the ACT, I did it cold, without preparation, and my best section, to my surprise, was English, in which I answered all the Usage and Mechanics questions correctly, but missed a handful of Rhetorical Skills questions. So what did I do? I studied, even some of the trickier comma rules or lesser-used punctuation (e.g., em dashes), so that I could feel more confident the next time I took the test. Fast-forward a bit, and after noticing how often shorter answers tended to be correct, how every piece of those Yes/No "Should the author add..." questions needed to make sense, and how there were always little clues that gave away the answers to sentence placement questions, I took the test again and flew through it. I knew exactly what to look for, and I felt 100 percent confident in probably 74 of those 75 questions. I used the extra time I had banked to check over the few questions that I had deliberated on, and in the end, all my effort paid off: 36/36, a 100th-percentile score on that particular test. For the past several years, I have shared my techniques with more high school students than I can count, and you know what? English has proved to be the number one test in which my clients have earned the biggest gains. (Math comes second, while the other sections come down more to pacing, if you were curious.) Learn the rules, learn what to look for in the questions themselves, and you can breeze through the English section knowing that you are accumulating points with each turn of the page.
ACT Math

ACT Math

ACT Math is somewhat time-intensive, like the rest of the sections of the test. Sure, the problems might start out looking easy enough, but by the time you get to the middle portion of the test, there might be one or two problems that give you reason to pause. The last part of the test can look like hieroglyphics to the uninitiated. This is where a top-notch tutor can step in and guide you through the topics that come up on the test, from matrices to logarithms. I have invested thousands of hours into helping students prepare to succeed on the ACT, and the Math section tends to be the second most improved for my students (behind English). I myself took the test twice, and I ended up at a 99th-percentile 34. I can teach you how to read the questions more effectively and set yourself up to answer them more confidently. Math is not just math. You can increase your score more than you think just by learning how to approach the questions on this particular test. The best part? The skills you will learn transfer directly to the SAT, so it is really a kill-two-birds-with-one-stone scenario.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

When I worked for a tutoring business before I launched out on my own, I was the in-house Verbal guru. Why? Because I had the stats to back it up. I aced both the ACT English and Reading sections, despite not being the fastest reader. I took it upon myself to create a system to codify the information as I combed through the passages, and it worked. Not only did I get a top result, but I have also helped hundreds of students, if not more than a thousand, earn huge score improvements by implementing the same strategies. You will learn pacing techniques, what to expect from each passage, and how to arrive at the correct answers, one after another. I am eager to share what I know about the test. Just give me a chance: you will thank me for your increased score later.
ACT Science

ACT Science

The first time I took the ACT, prior to self-study, I had no idea how to navigate the Science section, and I ran out of time with over ten questions unseen. I took it upon myself to learn how to take apart the entire section and put it all back together. The second time I took the test, I felt confident about almost every answer--there was a single question I had not gotten to, but I had guessed on it blindly. The result? One missed question and a 35 on the section. Validation! Since that time, I have shared everything I know about the ACT Science section with my students, many of whom have seen huge increases in their scores. I teach you the ins and outs of the passage types, question types, and even the occasional knowledge-based question that pops up. With practice, you will be approaching the final section of the ACT with full confidence, knowing you have as many points in the bank as you possibly could.
GMAT

GMAT

I must admit: the GMAT™ is my favorite test to teach. Why? Because it forces you to examine everything—words, numbers, figures—like a jeweler with a loupe. Plus, the CAT aspect of the test makes you your own worst enemy, knowing that the better you perform, the harder the questions are going to get. There is just nothing else quite like it, now that the GRE® has switched to adapting whole sections. I became so fascinated at pulling apart GMAT™ questions that I wrote a book on the test. No joke. On a test that rewards your attention to detail, I teach you how to leave no stone unturned.
GRE

GRE

Learn how to put in your best effort on the exam through a combination of foundational knowledge, test-specific technique, and practice. Whether you are starting from scratch or are looking to refine your knowledge and add a few points to your score, I can help. We look at how the sections break down in terms of content, as well as how the test adapts to your performance. We can work on pacing strategies, vocabulary, different areas of math, whatever will help you reach the finish line and know that you have done your best.
PSAT

PSAT

Most students are aware of the fact that the PSAT takes on a special designation during their junior year of high school, when the test morphs into the National Merit Scholarship Qualification Test (NMSQT). However, most people, students and parents alike, do not understand what it takes to qualify, how which state the students takes the test in makes a difference, or what separates a National Merit Scholar from a National Merit Finalist. I have several years of experience helping prepare students (and their parents) for the challenge of the NMSQT. During the course of study, I like to point out the differences between the PSAT/NMSQT and the actual SAT, as well as how the NMSQT is used in conjunction with the SAT to land scholarship money. One thing is for sure: my students feel prepared for the test by the time they take it, whether they are just getting their feet wet with the PSAT 10 or staring at the real deal in the NMSQT.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The thing about SAT Math is that you do not have to be particularly mathematically inclined to do well. Sure, it helps, but an average student (mid-500-level) can turn out a 650-700 score with the right practice material, technique, and attitude. Most students do not know how to use the test against itself. They fall into the same traps over and over because they think they have to solve each problem, step by step. I like to demystify the difficulty of the Math portion of the test by showing you how each section is laid out, how to use logic to break down even some of the toughest problems, and how to improve your efficiency so that timing becomes less of a concern. Many students dread math, and many also fear standardized tests. I get it. I used to fall into the latter camp. But then I took it upon myself to dismantle whole sections and lay them bare, such that any problem thereafter became just another brain teaser. Now, I like to share the same tips with my students that allowed me to hit a 790 on the Math portion of the test. (The kicker: I changed one answer to an incorrect one at the end.) For the past several years, I have taught single students, small groups, and even classrooms full of students how to think about the Math portion of the SAT to set themselves up for success. I enjoyed a steady stream of clients because the techniques get results. I hope you will be the next success story.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Probably the biggest mistake I see students make on the Reading/Writing portion of the SAT is that they give in to associative reasoning and they end up chasing answers that look somewhat enticing. I teach my students how to deconstruct the questions to understand just what is being asked and how to work toward the safest answer, one by one. Whether vocabulary-in-context questions prove tricky or grammar is something of a setback, you can turn your weaknesses into assets by learning solid strategies and putting in hard work.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

When the SAT underwent a revision in 2005 to include a Writing section, I knew that as a tutor, I would eventually take the test. I did, and I missed 0 questions out of 49. Fast-forward to 2016, when the test was overhauled, and a new Writing and Language section was unveiled. Again, I subjected myself to the test. The result: I missed 0 out of 44 questions. The secret is that the SAT tests the same concepts over and over, nothing arcane, such as agreement of an "of" prepositional phrase with the word "number" before it, and nothing debatable, such as whether to place an Oxford comma in a series of three items. If you know what to look for, then you can grab points left and right as one passage, then two, then three, and then the final one start to resemble one another. Sure, there may be tricky transitions or occasional placement questions, but with practice, you can feel confident about answering anything the test throws at you. I spent four years from 2014 to 2018 as the resident Verbal guru at a standardized test prep company I worked for before launching out on my own. I hope I may have the opportunity to show you how to attack the Writing and Language section of the SAT.

Knowledgeable and patient!

Andrew is very knowledgeable and thorough. My daughter is currently being helped with both SAT Reading and SAT Math and I couldn't be happier. Andrew explains in a way that is easy to understand and when the lesson is over, he completely documents what was covered and where my daughter was lagging and needing help. In only two lessons, she has gotten more help than with SAT Prep course that she is enrolled in. I feel confident that my daughter will not only improve her score, but that she will be able to approach problems in a new way to ease her anxiety with test taking. Thanks so much Andrew!
