I retired from a local private high school in 2012. I have taught all math subjects including Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB. I have taught math for 44 years. I have tutored students privately over the last 30 years. When I tutor, I usually meet for one hour. If I find the student is not responding, or has difficulty staying on task, I stop and talk to them about what interests them most. This usually gets them focused and we can continue. Having taught many years, I have many work sheets and other extra outside material to share. I have also taught an SAT prep course for 6 years. Several years ago, I taught the son of a former student as a home-schooled student. I had the pleasure of teaching him him one hour per week.

I have taught here in Montgomery County at Sandy Spring Friends School from 1974-1983, and in Prince George's County at DeMatha Catholic High School from 1983-2012. Before this, I taught in Montana and Idaho for a total of 3 years and in Lesotho (Peace Corps) 1972-1974.

I love teaching and sharing my love of math with others.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 throughout my 44 year history of teaching. I have used the parts of Algebra 2 and material in future courses to know what is most important to cover in Algebra 1.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 2 since my second year of teaching (1969). I have taught out of several different texts and am well versed in the material and the sequence of topics. Also, I have taught higher level math subjects and understand what comes up in Precalculus and Calculus, to better get the student ready for these classes.
Calculus,

Calculus

I cover all the material covered in the AP Calculus AB curriculum. This includes: I. Functions, graphs, and limits. A. Analysis of graphs. B. Limits of Functions (including one-sided limits). C. Asymptotic and Unbounded Behavior. D. Continuity as a Property of Functions. II. Derivatives A. Concept of the Derivative. B. Derivative at a Point. C. Derivative as a function. D. Second Derivatives. E. Applications of Derivatives. F. Computations of Derivatives. III. Integrals A. Interpretations and Properties of Integrals. B. Applications of Integrals. C. Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. D. Techniques of Anti-differentiation. E. Applications of Anti-differentiation. F. Numerical Approximations to Definite Integrals.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have taught geometry for at least 40 of my 44 years of teaching. I find students have a difficult time with geometry because it is a different mindset than algebra. It is not really about memorization so much as visualization of the ideas. That is, it is more about why something is a certain way rather than memorizing ideas.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have taught high school math for 44 years. The subjects I have taught are Algebra 1 and 2 for all those years and Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus for at least 35 years. I have tutored all of these subjects for at least 5 years.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

I have taught this subject for all of my career, starting with my student teaching. And, since it is part of the Precalculus curriculum, I am still up to date in it. I am able to derive the identities and show students how they are used and how to put them into the calculator.

Very knowledgeable.

Kevin was absolutely fantastic. He explained things to my daughter. She was comfortable with him and asked questions when she needed clarification. I won't hesitate to use him again and highly recommend him. Updated 7/2013 Kevin continues to be a fantastic tutor. He is able to explain concepts to my daughter so that she can fully grasp & understand them. He is aware of where common areas of confusion may arise and helps her with those, and is patient and thorough w/his explanations and in responding to her questions. I attribute my daughter's good grades in math last year to Kevin's tutoring, and am anticipating good grades again this upcoming year. Thank you Kevin! We continue to be so extremely happy with Kevin as a tutor. My daughter's math grades have gone up considerably since he's been tutoring her. Even more importantly, her self confidence in math has increased. After working with Kevin, she believes she can solve the problems and has the tools and strategies to figure it out. My only regret is that he isn't a teacher at her school! Thank you Kevin!

Great AP Calculus AB tutor

This is my daughters second lesson with Kevin. Both times he really helped her connect the dots on the why and not just how to solve the problem. He even showed her how to derive the formula herself if she ever forgot it. We will be making this a more regular tutoring schedule to prepare for the AP exam. Also, Kevin’s availability is great as my daughter is a competitive basketball player and often needs availability in the evening or weekends. Would highly recommend!!
