I’ve always been fascinated with the process of how we come to believe in ourselves (self-efficacy), and how that process helps us to establish an identity and become capable adults. During the adolescent years, this is the most pressing psychosocial issue.

I am blessed to have three sons, each one with different interests. As they were growing up I immersed myself into coaching sports, leading scout packs and troops, teaching religious education, and leading youth ministry. My involvement in these activities gave me many platforms to practice coaching/teaching/mentoring. Working with youth is my passion. I have been a full-time mathematics teacher and tutor in middle and high schools; earned MSDE certification in Secondary Mathematics; hold a BS Degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute; and completed master's degree courses at the University of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Maryland. I have worked as a Civil Engineer for 33 years and can bring real life examples into the classroom.

My teaching approach begins with forming and nurturing trusting relationships, as students will not allow themselves to be guided without a positive and trusting relationship. It also focuses on satisfying the student’s needs for competence, autonomy, relationships with others, and fun. I will never charge you for my services if those services are deemed to be unsatisfactory. Our first meeting is an opportunity to get acquainted and is free. I like to use the internet resources for practice outside of tutoring sessions to help students reinforce skills and allow me to assess progress. Fees for online sites are included in my tutoring fee. Students may call me for guidance outside of tutoring sessions for free. Convenient locations for tutoring sessions will be determined.

I am looking forward to assisting you!

AMAZING Tutor!

John was great! He took the time to get some information about what you were learning before the tutoring session. He arrived to the session on time and fully prepared with notes and graphs to help you learn. He typed up a notes page for helpful information and let you keep all notes and graphs. He took the time to explain things clearly and didn't move on until you were comfortable with the material. I definitely recommend him to anyone! He helped me with my Calculus problems and made the subject a lot clearer for me.
