College Counseling

I have nearly 40 years' experience in college counseling. At the University of Maryland, from 1989 until 1994, and at the George Washington University, 1993-2005, I was an adviser to undergraduate and graduate students for the Philosophy Department, advising both current and prospective students on application and admission to universities, on financial aid applications and related documents, on documentation for international students, on maintenance of work and grades to continue proper status, on course selection and graduation requirements, on applications for scholarships and fellowships, and on the taking of standardized tests and writing of essays for applications. As a private school teacher and a private tutor since 2007, I have helped hundreds of high school students and adult private school students with their university selection, entrance test preparation, and applications and essays.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I teach all levels of math, from elementary through middle school to high school and college, and I have taught in private schools, in universities and as a private tutor. I have a great deal of knowledge and expertise not only about the topics of math but also about the psychology of learning and teaching math and about its history, connections to culture, philosophy and science, and how it shows up in games and puzzles, engineering, science, art and technology, schoolwork and home life and jobs. I enjoy helping students -- children but adults too -- see the value, interest, enjoyment and even beauty that can be found in math. And I enjoy looking at math with others as they learn it and work on it; I go through it with them and experience it again as the classes go on
English

English

I have taught English to many hundreds of students at a private school and before that I was a university professor for almost 20 years. I am an expert in all areas of English language: speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and accent reduction, and English literature (fiction, poetry, plays).

I can help you at any level, from the very beginning to college/university studies and professional careers.
Grammar

Grammar

I have taught and tutored all aspects of English language to many hundreds of students, in private schools and as a tutor since 2007. I teach reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar to students at all levels: pre-school, elementary, middle and high school, college and university undergraduate and graduate, and professional. While I was a student, teacher and professor for twenty years, I studied grammar (of English and of other languages) through language research, linguistics, psychology and history. I can help students improve their grammar and go further - to improve their style.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I teach correct handwriting skills to students of all ages, from children to adults. For example, I teach adult students at a private school as part of their preparation for college. In that program, students write, on average, one handwritten essay for thirty minutes a week; the essay must not only adequately answer a question and satisfy standards of good writing (grammar, vocabulary, relevance, etc.) but also satisfy standards of legibility, symbol choice and punctuation. This is especially important for students whose native language and culture use a different approach to orthography and spelling than is standard in English in the U.S. I have been teaching this to 15 students a week (on average, per class) each week since 2007.
IELTS

IELTS

As an English-as-a-Second language teacher, both at a private school and as a private tutor, since 2007, I have prepared many students for the IELTS test, a test often preferred by students who intend to enter business or corporate employment outside of the US. The IELTS test has two versions, the General Version (used primarily for students seeking employment) and the Academic Version (used primarily by students seeking entry to a university). I can prepare students for either one. I have a great deal of experience helping students to cope with the pressures and requirements of this sort of testing. Of course, I teach the requirements and skills needed for all four areas of language skill tested by the IELTS -- speaking and listening, reading and writing.
ISEE

ISEE

Since 2007, I have tutored many students, including many who have immigrated to the U.S. with their families (from China, Korea, Brazil and several European and African nations), and who want to attend an independent or private school as a step on the way to attending an Ivy League or similar university. Those students, primarily in middle school and early high school years, have needed to score well on the SSAT or the ISEE. I tutor students to take those tests and do well, developing all of their language skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and analysis of texts.

Praxis

Praxis

I am a former university professor. I taught at the university level for about 20 years. Since 2007, I have taught many students how to take the PRAXIS tests they needed for admission to teacher education programs and to qualify for teaching licenses in Maryland, Virginia and other states. I tutor for PRAXIS I, a test usually taken before entry into a teacher education program or just after a student has been admitted to the program. It tests students' competence in reading, writing and basic mathematics at the academic level, that is, at the basic level for undergraduates. The Reading section requires students to read relatively short, somewhat academic texts and show their understanding of the content, rhetorical style and argumentation by answering questions about the texts. Students need to be taught about grammar, vocabulary, style, analysis and basic/general knowledge of culture and facts suitable for a graduating university senior. The Writing section tests five basic skills: Students need to be able to write argumentatively, write in an informative or expository style, revise sentences and paragraphs to be better, demonstrate an understanding of grammar, vocabulary and organization, and demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for academic published material. The Mathematics section requires students to show that they understand the sorts of math skills and knowledge expected in high school. I have taught all of these language and mathematics skills to many people and have successfully helped many students to prepare for and pass the PRAXIS I test. I also tutor for PRAXIS II, the subject tests that ask students to demonstrate their skill and knowledge in the specific area(s) they want to teach. I can help students study for many of their specific content areas, since I can help them study many topics in the arts, sciences, humanities, engineering and some languages. Most recently, I have helped students prepare for PRAXIS II tests in English Language Arts and Composition and English Language L

After nearly 20 years as a university professor, I now teach at a private school and as a private tutor. I have taught speaking (including pronunciation, articulation, erudition), and accent reduction and elimination, since 2007. Articulation is about making words, phrases, sentences easily, smoothly, clearly, and effectively. I can help you with grammar and vocabulary and practice to help you articulate your thoughts well. Erudition is about being skillful with language. I can help you raise your level of language skill and style so that you can speak and write very well for school, university, or business. I regularly tutor speaking and speech, one-on-one, to private students, some in middle school, some in high school, some in college, and some working adults, via online lessons.

Knowledgeable

Steven is very knowledgeable. We discussed logic games and tips and tricks to spot certain subtleties in types of problems. We went over wording of the question that may try and trick a test taker. Overall I definitely learned a thing or two.

Great English Tutor

I have learned English from Teacher Steven Fleishman for over a year on Wyzant. He is a great teacher and has profound knowledge about languages and linguistics. I recommend him to anyone who is not native to English and wants to improve his/her English. I have been in the United States for over 11 years. Although people could mostly understand what I said, I knew that my oral English had some issues. I found Steven on Wyzant with the goal to reduce my accent. In our first class, Steven diagnosed two major problems in my oral English: wrong pronunciations in some specific sounds and incorrect grammar usage. My learning with him consists of two sessions, where the first session is to reduce accent, and the second session is to improve my grammar. In the first session, Steven helped me identify my problematic sounds and make specific plans for me to correct them. He has some great tools which helped me get rid of my old pronunciation habits and build new habits. During this session, I could see my own improvements in a pretty short period of time, which greatly boosted my confidence. We finished the first session after about five months. By that time, my colleagues and my wife both told me that my pronunciation was much clearer and easier to understand than before. After the first session, we started the second session-- learning and practicing correct grammar. Steven recommended to me two great grammar textbooks. I learned all of the chapters in the two books from him and wrote essays to practice the knowledge that I learned from the books. In the beginning of the session, we could find many grammatical mistakes in my essays. After learning grammar, I now pay more attention to it when writing and speaking. Now, the number of mistakes in my essays has dropped a lot. By fixing my grammar mistakes, my oral English also has become much less confusing. Steven really tailored his courses to my specific problems and needs, which is why the whole process was efficient and effective. He has profound knowledge which can answer almost all my questions. He is also very patient and cool. In the end, I really appreciate Steven’s help, and I would like to recommend him to you if you are looking for a great English teacher.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tuor

Steven went over my daughters high school stats, background, interests in majoring in college and advised her on the application and admission process and went over with her what works and what does not. He was honest in his opinion and my daughter is very appreciative of that. Thanks Steven!

Knowledgeable

We did a diagnostics to figure out what I really need to be working on. He helped me understand what I need to practice more and why. Instead of jumping to the harder topics, we worked on the foundations that are needed to be able to do the harder topics.
