Grammar,

Grammar

As a Montessori teacher I had the opportunity to work with elemental language skills including extensive usage of correct grammar. My background included working with the "traditional" method for understanding grammar. Using correct grammar enables better writing skills, using words correctly to form complete sentences and preventing run-on sentences, etc.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught at Children's Montessori School in Escondido, CA for thirty years. I spent many of those years teaching fifth and sixth grades simultaneously in one self-contained classroom. I tutored other students from other grades both before and after school and since moving back to Maryland I have been a substitute teacher and I have been a one-on-one student aide in the special education department at Ellicott Mills Middle School and Glenwood Middle School. Teaching is my great love and I want to continue to help any student who needs it.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I taught fifth and sixth grade in a Montessori school in California. Having the Montessori background enables me to use a variety of methods to enable complete understanding of math concepts. I have successfully been tutoring elementary math for the past three years.

My background included working with the "traditional" method for understanding grammar. Handwriting,

Handwriting

I taught English grammar for more than twenty-five years. My students had to know all parts of speech and how to use them appropriately in complex sentences. While diagramming sentences is no longer the "norm" in the public school curriculum, my students considered it to be necessary requirement and became student tutors in middle school and later in high school. A major condition of my class was the handwriting had to be legible in order for me to provide a grade for the work that was submitted to me. This was not always a simple task, and I then had to create individual methods that each student could use to achieve this goal. Many students were sure that this was an impossibility, however, they left my classroom in June able to write clearly with correct grammar and complete sentences. Because I was teaching in a private school I was able to design individual programs for my students to enable them to excel in handwriting. I used personally created practice papers that established how high upper case letters should be and how far lower case letters should be relative to the upper case letters. I had the opportunity to work with numerous students who were not enrolled in my school but needed help in legible writing skills. While this was a challenging endeavor, it was also rewarding to see the success that these students achieved and the referrals I obtained as a result of their success.
Phonics,

Phonics

As a Montessori trained teacher I believe that phonics is crucial for reading, spelling, writing and any of those subjects requiring the decoding of words for reading comprehension and understanding. Montessori methods teach phonics through the use of sand paper letters, and then forming simple words by learning the sounds of the letters not just memorizing them as words. A Montessori student is able to read by decoding words, not by "sight". This helps in English, spelling, vocabulary, as well as any subject that involves reading including directions on packages and recipes. Phonics is a wonderful tool to have for a feeling of "I can do this".

Forever thankful we found this awesome tutor!

Every session is so helpful to my 7th grade twins! Ms. Patricia connects so beautifully with them and makes math fun! She’s able to work with each of them separately and meet their individual needs.

Great tutor with great communication

Patricia is a great tutor. I saw a fast improvement with my son's writing ability’s which is why we asked her to work with our daughter. In just a few weeks our daughter is improving in her reading and doing better on spelling tests. Patricia is patient and communicates with us about what they did and how she did with his lesson. I always know what they worked on and would recommend her 100 %!

She not only knows her stuff on any subject, but she helps her students learn to organize their work and their thoughts. My daughter is getting all A’s and Ms Pat is a big part of why she feels so confident in her school work.

Great lesson!

My daughter started to lesson in writing for her. It is great. She modified my daughter's writing in details, and gave the words list to memorize. I am satisfied with what she did.

Great reading tutor

Our 7 year old son has been seeing Patricia weekly for about 4 months now and we are thrilled with how well he’s doing. He recently got a really good report on his report card in reading and we chalk it up to Patricia working her magic and helping our son learn to enjoy reading!

Amazing Teacher

I am so blessed to find person like Teacher Patricia. She is an amazing person and great teacher. She has excellent teaching skills and great sense of humor. My 9 yrs old is learning a lot about English language, vocabulary and comprehension. He waits for his session with Patricia. Again I feel myself lucky to find her for my son and have a plan to have my daughter coached by her as well.

Patient and clear

She taught our son who is in 5th about multiplying and dividing decimals. She walked though each step and did a great summary review at the end. We would use her again.
