Hi!

My name is James and my most recent educational endeavor was in Biomedical Engineering (emphasis on signal processing and medical devices). During my time at Johns Hopkins, I did projects on RAGT (Robot Assisted Gait Training) control systems, analyzed gait patterns in ALS, CP, and stroke patients, and worked on BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) prosthetic control and pattern detection. Since graduating with my Master's, I have been working as Data Scientist and Analyst, although I have a strong passion for teaching in my spare time.

Tutoring and mentoring high achieving students has been a major part of my life since 2004. During that time I have done everything from SAT and AP test prep to teaching college courses and (almost) everything in between. As a tutor, I have assisted hundreds of students with college prep including courses, activities, and application essay planning and revision. Many of my former students have gone on to universities such as Brown, Berkeley, UCLA, and NYU. My teaching experience spans from educating middle school students all the way up to grad school students, so I am able to adapt to quite a range of academic levels.

Lately, my tutoring time has been dedicated to mentoring students and assisting them in developing research projects. Recent topics have primarily focused on time series analysis, biomedical signals (like EEG and EKG), and stock market/asset value analysis. Furthermore, I have trained mentees in the requisite knowledge to perform related research, write up research papers and abstracts, and design posters for conferences around the U.S.

If my background appeals to you, I would love to chat with you further.

Have a great day!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taken advanced mathematics (differential equations, engineering math, etc) at the grad school level in engineering, and have tutored high school and college math for over a decade.
Anthropology

Anthropology

I took a bachelor's in Anthropology where I took coursework in Native American culture covering both physical and cultural details of native peoples. It included the Pacific Northwest, South and Central America, and First People of Canada. I learned Native habitat construction, cultural behaviors, Native food preparation, and how to develop and sustain food cultivars. I also studied environmental considerations affecting tribal groups throughout North America and Africa. Furthermore, I studied European food cultures, Middle Eastern and African tribal customs, and South American (Brazilian) tribal groups. I did (a submitted for publication) first-person research on tattoo symbolism in the Central Valley of California.
AutoCAD

AutoCAD

After years as a hobbyist CAD designer, I ran my own business doing CAD for clients from 2017 to 2019. I still do commissioned CAD designs in my free time. I usually use Fusion360, although I have used a wide range of CAD tools over the years.
Biology

Biology

I have a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins and the subject requested is Biomedical Engineering design.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I completed a minor in Chemistry. I have taken a year of Core Chemistry, a year of Organic Chemistry, a year of Biochemistry, and various other chemistry (and chemistry-based) courses including Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Biomaterials/Material Science.
Data Science

Data Science

I focused on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and biosignal pattern recognition in grad school. After graduation, I worked as a data scientist and data engineer, and attended a Machine Learning Engineer bootcamp in 2022 and a Cloud Architecture (AWS) bootcamp in 2023. I am currently developing stock/asset price prediction algorithms and data pipelines as part of my day job.
Film

Film

Hi! I previously tutored two students through the Film program at UCLA. The BA student was more focused on writing, editing, stage design, those sort of things. The other has a minor in film, more on the history/aesthetics/analysis side. Both graduated with very high GPAs (both had Magna-level honors).
Genetics

Genetics

I have taken several genetics-based courses including Introduction to Genetics, Molecular Biology, Animal Physiology, Bioinformatics, and Tissue Engineering.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have been using MATLAB for over a decade, including professionally since 2018. During that time I have used MATLAB for EEG research (e.g. DOI:10.3390/brainsci14040330) as well as for biomedical signal processing (HR, BVP, etc.), audio processing, and to develop databases and to run SQL queries via APIs.

Excellent tutor!

James was so helpful and walked me through every step or my problem. He made sure I was 100% comfortable with my final design before he logged off and answered all my questions. He was knowledgable and encouraging I will definitely be working with him again!

Friendly and helpful!

James helped me get a foundation laid for a specific CAD project and I’m looking forward to working with him in the future! I think having a personable tutor really helps learning go more smoothly. I will be coming back to him for more advice, for sure. Thanks James!

center of mass and volute techniques

Great lesson, started the lesson by learning how to correctly find the center of mass for spinning parts, followed by continuing our last lesson by figuring out how to create a guitar volute. James is very thorough and enjoyable to work with. Will be back!

AWESOME TUTOR !!!!!

James is definitely an excellent tutor! I am so happy I found him! In 1.5 hours, he was able to help me with a project that I couldn't fix for six weeks! Very knowledgeable and professional tutor! Highly recommend!

great lesson!

It was great! We went through quite a few things, including the guitar curve tops, basic neck shape, and fretboard design. I will work on it this week before our next lesson.

great lesson!

James was very thorough and had good explanations. I learned a lot by finally having someone I could directly ask questions to. I supplied a shape that isn’t easy to make and the hardest part was virtually done in about 45 minutes, which was a huge relief that it could be done at all. Excited to try to recreate the shape we made during the week, and learn a bit more next Sunday.

Thanks, James helped me out with some Fusion 360 modeling

He helped me understand some of the intricacies of the Fusion 360 software and the models and went above and beyond to get the project to a good place, even going a bit overtime. Thanks man, it was helpful

Knowledgable, efficient, personable, great communication

I was amazed at James efficiency and ability to connect. He helped our son build up the skills to complete a Fusion 360 project in 1/2 the time. Furthermore, he established such a great connection and rapport that our son went from reluctantly accepting help to scheduling the 3rd session by himself! James is very responsive both when communicating with me and with my son and he went out of his way to find the time to meet with our son on a short notice. He also helped me with gauging the time needed to complete the assignment (it was past due and time was critical) so that we could plan out the sessions. I cannot sing enough praises for James.
