I have been teaching community college science courses since 2009 including introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, and general chemistry.
The keystone of my tutoring philosophy is that good tutors impart to their students much more than just subject knowledge. Through dedicated teaching and mentoring, tutors can encourage students to assume responsibility for their own continued learning.
In addition to encouraging students to adopt self-directed learning, a tutor should strive to present new information to students in ways that give them the best opportunity to assimilate it. The best means that I know of to accomplish this is to review key elements of background material and then ask, "What are we still missing?", or,"What's next?" By helping students consolidate their existing knowledge immediately before adding new information, tutors can help them learn better by simple temporal association. Also, through interactive/interrogative teaching, a tutor can offer his/her students the opportunity to map their own path to new knowledge. I think the best chance for students to effectively integrate new concepts and information into their existing knowledge comes when the students can use strategies for learning they already possess. Jonathan is by far the best tutor my daughter has ever met. His organizational skills, and ability to understand the needs of a student and help him/her progress are exceptional.
He is also very patient and respectful. My daughter was not only impressed with his knowledge but also with his directness and clarity when explaining a subject. She is very pleased with him, and with his help has learned how to connect the material and organize it to better comprehend its complexity and truly immerse herself in a productive learning experience. We look forward to more tutoring sessions as the year concludes.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
After graduating from college, I worked for the Upjohn Company for 3 years as a biochemistry assistant in the CNS Diseases Research Unit. My work at Upjohn involved screening of NCEs for anxiolytic and cognition-enhancing properties. From 1995-2009 I worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the Department of Neurology. For the last 10 years at MGH I was the Principal Investigator in a research laboratory investigating targeted delivery of therapeutic proteins to the CNS.
