I have been teaching for over twenty years and have a master's degree in American History. I specialize in United States History - from the middle school to Advanced Placement (AP) level. I love history and want students to understand and develop a passion for it too! The best approach to teaching history is to learn it as a story or narrative - not just an endless series of dates, events, and people. Think of history is an unfolding plot, like reading a book or watching a movie. You should be on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. This can be achieved by placing yourself back in time, unsure of what happens next. My way of teaching history is to be a storyteller and placing students in the narrative. Now when you read a primary source, it is not a dry, boring document but a key to learning what someone was thinking, feeling, and hoping about what comes next.
This is how I I have been teaching US History for over 13 years now. My students appreciate history in a new way and some who have never liked it before, now enjoy coming to class. Mix in a little humor and fun activities and suddenly it is one of their favorite classes of the day. I can help you learn and appreciate history - and maybe even grow to love it!
Prior to being a middle school and high school history teacher, I was an instructor in the Secondary Education Department of Stonehill College (which means I trained future teachers). So, I am well-versed in delivering content in an easily understood and engaging way. Drawing political cartoons, completing crossword puzzles, writing your own multiple choice questions - these are all ways you can learn and remember key information. If you like Google Slides with important facts as bullet points, we can use those too. Struggle with writing or research assignments? We can break them down into individualized steps and work through them together. Whatever way you want to learn, we can figure it out together.
The days of being bored or confused by history are over!
