Qualifications for “statistics”

I've taught a summer AP class in statistics. I feel particularly adept at teaching this subject because it straddles quantitative and qualitative approaches. This seems to throw off many student, but I find that once they get the hang of "telling a story with numbers" they flourish.

I completed a degree in Physics from Yale University, and offer a number of years of experience as a teacher and tutor. I am also a freelance writer and consider myself as capable in the humanities (reading and writing skills) as in math and science.

For the past four years, I've worked with one of the leading in-home tutoring groups in the area, helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, as well as various subject and Advanced Placement tests. I also worked regularly with students as an academic and writing tutor.

I feel my key strengths are my ability to clarify difficult concepts in an articulate manner, my ability to engage and motivate students, and my ability to instill confidence by developing academic and test strategies that are optimum for an individual student.

Another way I work with students is as a ski coach. What I love about tutoring is similar to what I love about coaching--helping students improve their performance.

English

I began working with ESL students through responding to requests from parents of a few of my students. I enjoy helping people learn English and have had excellent results with Mandarin and Hindi speakers. The key tools I use include the "Side by Side" books, "ESL Grammar," and a mirror for pronunciation practice.

Literature

In addition to completing the literature requirements at college, I've taken a number of post-graduate courses at The Harvard Extension School. I've gained tutoring experience by helping a number of students with high school and college level literature courses (which included assistance with essay writing), as well the Literature SAT subject test.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I've found the key skill needed to do well on the (new) SAT reading section is the ability to be flexible in interpreting the passages. This allows a student to spot incorrect answers that may initially be appealing but that are inconsistent with some element of the text (or that are simply not justified by the text). I think the new SAT is a clear improvement over the old test and preparing for it helps students raise their reading skills to a level they'll need for college.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

In helping prepare students for the SAT writing section, I focus on teaching students the essential grammar rules as well as the key characteristics of a well-structured, high-scoring essay. For grammar, the key skill is being able to know when one can rely on “hearing” an error versus when it’s necessary to be more analytical. For the essay, the key skill has now become the ability to carefully analyze a document and show how different rhetorical elements interact to achieve (or fail to achieve) the author's intent.

Relates well to our teenage son, building confidence.

Jon has been working with our son for a few months helping him with trigonometry. He relates very well to him, they seem to be like partners working on the problems together. According to our son, Jon's explanations have really helped clarify the work. Over time our son is getting more confident and competent in trigonometry. His test scores are improving. Jon is very personable and the chemistry between him and our son is great. We highly recommend him as a math tutor.

Great tutor

Jonathan is very patient and kind to my daughter who needs help with the Math SAT. She feels much more confident and prepared after working with him. I highly recommend him as a tutor!

Clear and detailed explanations

My daughter was looking more for teaching rather than answering specific questions. She found Jonathan's teaching clear and detailed. He taught more than what was asked which helped her understand the material better.

Dedicated and patient tutor

Jonathan has been helping my son over the summer improve his scores for the Literature SAT Subject Test. He is extremely knowledgeable, well prepared and patient. He has been most helpful in being flexible over scheduling issues and he tries hard to fit in with our busy family life. He communicates well and our son feels so much more prepared. We are grateful to Jonathan and would recommend him highly to any other student.

great tutor!

Jonathan has a great approach, tutoring in a kind and clear way. My daughter is eager and appreciative to meet with Jon r.e. her AP Stats class. He always asks ahead of time what topics she is working on in class that week, to be fully prepared in all nuances of her syllabus.

First session very successful!

Jonathan came for a two hour session to prepare my daughter for her upcoming ACT. She told me she learned a great deal and he was very easy to work with. Looking forward to the next session!

A great choice

I chose Jonathan to work with my 8th grade son, who is preparing for an upcoming SSAT. Equipped with experience, patience, and plenty of source material, Jonathan has helped my son immensely. They have worked on both strategy and content, covering all aspects of the test. Jonathan's explanations are clear and helpful. He has a good sense of my son's strengths and weaknesses and is helping my son move forward through thoughtful homework assignments and a careful review of all missed questions. My son enjoys working with Jonathan and knows that his efforts will pay off with better test scores this fall.
