About LeighAnne

I am a public school teacher licensed in Elementary Education, Special Education Moderate Disabilities K-8, and Elementary and Middle School Mathematics as well as certified in Sheltered English Immersion. I recently completed the qualifications for my high school level licensing. I currently teach mathematics full-time along with a creative writing class and have previously worked as both a literacy teacher and general classroom teacher for all subjects. In addition to teaching for 10 years, I've tutored students professionally for 8 years in grades 1-12. My tutoring experience includes all subject areas: reading, writing, math, science, and study skills for grades K-12, including MCAS prep. For the last 5 years I have been offering SAT, ACT, ASVAB and GED prep, as well as MTEL support for aspiring teachers.

My tutoring services include homework support, re-teaching, study skills, individualized lesson plans, and suggestions for at-home strategies. I use many of my own class-room materials and believe in a multi-sensory approach that allows students to explore a concept in depth using manipulatives, discussion, and practice. I use lots of visuals when teaching and encourage students to connect their learning to real life experiences. In graduate school, I completed research projects that analyzed best teaching practices and looked specifically at how students learn.

Recently, I began assisting students with college counseling, including the application process, essay writing, and scholarship searches. As I began to navigate the college circuit with my own children, I realized that I could share these skills with students so now offer that as one of my tutoring services.

In addition to tutoring in person, I offer on-line tutoring via emails, skype, google hang outs, and Wyzant's Online Tutoring Forum. This allows me to support families who live long distance, need short-term immediate support, and who are looking for a less expensive option for tutoring. My rates for on-line tutoring are significantly less than my in-person rates.

I look forward to working with your families!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with several autistic students during my years in education and also with children in my girl scout troop. This year I am working at summer program specifically for children with Autism.I have learned that a structured routine— using visuals to teach and clear, direct language— are important strategies. I have taken a course that addressed needs of children with autism, and we explored both the need to be aware of environmental distractions and the significance of connecting with children based on interest level.

Focusing on fine motor skills is a critical component to supporting hand writing development, so I will often include fine motor activities within our lessons.
