Hello / Bonjour! My name is Julia and I'm eager to work with motivated students who are looking to progress in either English or French. I have 8 years of classroom experience teaching French at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School where I was responsible for classes ranging from beginner level French 2 all the way up to advanced honors level French 4. I also volunteered after school with students helping them with English, including essay editing, project organization / planning, grammar, reading comprehension and general homework help.

My approach to language teaching has always been one of balancing form (grammar and vocabulary) with culture through all 4 modes of communication (speaking, listening, reading and writing). I use a variety of authentic resources including music, film, poetry, excerpts from novels as well as a variety of online platforms. I strive to guide students with kindness and patience while gently pushing them outside their comfort zone to help them progress. My hope through working together is that you will become excited about learning a language and see it as an important step in becoming a global citizen and having the opportunity to engage with people from all over the world!

Prior to my time at Lincoln-Sudbury, I observed at Brookline High School and completed a student teaching practicum at Cambridge Rindge and Latin while pursuing an MAT at Boston University. My undergraduate degree is from Bryn Mawr College where I was a French and Comparative Literature double major. I spent an academic year abroad in Paris where I lived with a host family and was directly enrolled in Literature, Film and Art History classes at the Sorbonne and Sorbonne Nouvelle. I have also spent time in several other francophone countries including French Polynesia, Haiti, Morocco and Senegal.

I look forward to discussing your goals and working together. Please feel free to reach out!

While teaching at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, I volunteered after school with our METCO students helping them with English, including essay editing, project organization / planning, grammar, reading comprehension and general homework help. Additionally, I taught conversational English as a volunteer at the Haitian Women’s Association of Boston and while abroad in Haiti and Senegal. One of my undergraduate concentrations was in Comparative Literature.
French

French

My undergraduate concentration was in French and I spent an academic year abroad in Paris where I lived with a host family and was directly enrolled in Literature, Film and Art History classes at the Sorbonne and Sorbonne Nouvelle. As a French teacher, I have coordinated / chaperoned 3 student exchanges in several regions of France (Le Havre, Lyon and Paris). Additionally, I served as a French club advisor and mentored student TAs. I worked as a 1-on-1 private tutor for a Brookline High School student during grad school (1 year). I received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to participate in a month-long 20th-century Theater course in Avignon during their annual theater festival my first summer of teaching. I have also spent time in several other francophone countries including French Polynesia, Haiti, Morocco and Senegal which greatly broadened my historical perspective on current territories / former colonies and deeply enriched my cultural understanding. Prior to my time at Lincoln-Sudbury, I observed at Brookline High School and completed a student teaching practicum at Cambridge Rindge and Latin while pursuing an MAT at Boston University.
