Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I use a different approach to teach my students Algebra. I help the student develop competence and self-confidence then build towards subject mastery without knowledge gaps. This preparation provides a truly solid foundation for learning more advanced mathematics later on.

American History

American History is a continuum of many events and ideas. America is the first country in history that was founded based on the idea that all people are created equal. However, studying American History shows that achieving the goal of true equality in reality has been a continuous and often difficult struggle. There have been many steps forward, backward and sideways as the states stagger in different directions at different times; unsynchronized in their actions unless compelled to alignment by judicial decision. This is the American way of democracy, awkward, yet successful.

I am an engineering and management consultant with 26 years' experience. Before starting this business, I was an aerospace engineer and program manager for 15 years. I have an MBA (Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute), M. Aerospace Engineering (Cornell University) and a BS (Mechanical Engineering) also from Cornell University.

Calculus is the study of instantaneous change using a variety of methods to solve many different kinds of problems. We can use calculus as a framework to model the real world to help understand how it behaves under different circumstances. Of course, calculus is a mathematical tool set that we use for this and other purposes. One of the benefits of studying calculus is it will greatly improve one's other mathematical skills, such as algebra. Mastery of calculus provides a solid basis for understanding more advanced mathematics and rigorous analytical thinking.

I've played classical and jazz percussion for over 50 years. I was a student of Art Peretta, drummer for the Tony Pastor Orchestra (1940s era big band with singer Rosemary Clooney). Art taught me studio percussion techniques, music sight reading, and the business of music.

I am a native American English speaker and have helped over ten immigrants master the nuances and improve their pronunciation of the American English language and idiom. I've studied other languages (e.g., Mandarin Chinese and Spanish) and understand the difficulties of learning a foreign language's phonemes.

I have an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and 26 years experience as a management and engineering consultant.

Government & Politics

I am an active citizen who is engaged in the helping our democracy succeed. I've had direct experience working within the Federal Government as a senior Navy officer with 30 years of service. I've travelled all over the world and observed different forms of government in practice. Often, I've had to keep my political opinions to myself. However, I do have opinions about governance, decision-making and the impact of politics on society. I have seen what works and does not work and the reasons why. I enjoy helping my students analyze and attempt to understand different cultures and their forms of government; some effective and others less so.

I have an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1981), which included significant marketing coursework. In addition, I am an entrepreneur and have operated my own consulting practice since 1990. Further, I have helped many clients with their business plan creation, which includes a comprehensive marketing plan. In addition, I have 37 years of knowledge, skills and experience preparing management and technical proposals for companies that include a commercialization plan for their product offerings.

Mechanical Engineering

I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University. In addition, I have 39 years of experience as a consulting engineer and senior manager. My clients are high technology companies seeking to create new products and technologies for both government and commercial applications.

Physical Science

I've been a practicing engineer for well over 30 years. I enjoy tutoring students, as my time permits, to help them appreciate the world through their new physics and mathematics skills. Students gain self-confidence and pride in accomplishment as their understanding of these fundamental subjects improves over time.

Proofreading is a careful examination of written text to find and correct typographical errors, grammatical mistakes, inconsistent writing style and, of course, spelling. I have proofread many doctoral dissertations, masters theses, business plans, proposals and thousands of reports resulting in superior communication of the ideas and information they contain. Let me help you achieve your goals through improving your written work.

Study Skills

I assist my students to develop their focus by identifying and eliminating distractions, establishing and maintaining a routine, having a positive mental attitude, develop organizational skills, engage their brain to improve memory and analysis skills, take better quality notes, improve time management and avoid procrastination. I reinforce helpful skills through effective practice and frequent observation and testing while addressing student's weaknesses through honest discussions and specific feedback.

I use a different approach to teaching trigonometry. I help the student develop competence and confidence. Understanding trigonometry means learning to recognize many different patterns and build solutions using a variety techniques. I am a strong advocate of Khan Academy where the student learns the lessons as homework and works with the tutor on solving problems. This is different from most public school approaches, which have mixed results.

Building a strong vocabulary is essential to developing one's ability to communicate clearly. Possessing and using a strong vocabulary allows us to have many tools in our intellectual toolbox to address various communication requirements; some subtle and nuanced, others terse and obvious. Further, a strong vocabulary is fundamental towards becoming a truly educated person and developing as a functioning and effective member of a civilized society. Therefore, I include vocabulary development as part of all tutoring assignments regardless of topic.

Developing one's ability to write clearly, uniformly and consistently is an essential skill in any culture. However, few people take time to develop their writing abilities. Those who do, often achieve greater success in their careers. Clear writing develops clearer thinking. However, learning to write well takes practice. I help my students learn to think clearly, which helps them write their thoughts clearly.
