I have been a full time High School science teacher since 2009. Currently, I am teaching two CP and one Honor Chemistry in Dorchester Academy, one of Boston Public School District high school. In addition, I also teach a class of elective; Advance Topics in Science: Chemistry of Food and Medicine. Prior, I have taught AP and Honor Chemistry, IB Science, CP Chemistry, Physics and CP Biology in districts with diverse student body. Currently I hold licenses to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics (8-12) in Massachusetts. Trained academically for many years, I will be able to help students in many areas including, but not limited to, sciences, math and most high school subjects, SAT, SAT2, ACT, and test prep like, GRE, MCAT, ISEE etc ...
I am a native of Hong Kong from where I have earned my B.Sc. (major in Chemistry and minor in Marketing) and M.Phil. degree in Organometallic Chemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before I came to US in the late 80's. I earned my PhD degree from the Physical Science Division of the University of Chicago on 1993, working with highly-strained, cage-shaped, non-natural products, specifically the cubane and cubylcarbinyl systems. I determined the fastest rearrangement rate of any aliphatic hydrocarbon radical at the time. My graduate research there also involved the attempted alternative route for the synthesis of pentaprismane and mechanistic study of an novel ring system. Afterwards, I did postdoctoral research in area of antisense/antigene drug design at University of California Santa Barbara and later at Boston University working on design, synthesis and photonic study of novel designer dyes for industrial and military applications. Over those years in academia, I have equipped myself with knowledge of a wide range of sciences, math disciplines and skills, which I find extremely useful for my tutoring students.
I also tutor beginner Chinese and work well with ESL/ELL/ESOL students. I am fluent in written and classic Chinese and speak both Cantonese and Mandarin fluently.
Prior to teaching high school science, I have worked as the FIRST Asian mayoral appointee in Quincy, MA, a city with the influx of Asian immigrants during last few decades. While there, I have had many opportunities of informal teaching with the Asian/immigrant populations; Sunday Schools, classes for older learners, First Time Home Buyer Class, Civic and Citizenship classes, Government System and Democracy in US, Computer and ESL classes...etc. This allowed me to understand the unique needs of these newer Americans, their families, and their school aged students so that I can be helpful for them in their daily lives and schooling in order for them to be successful in US.
My other experience includes serving as Director on the Board of Directors of the South Shore Elder Services, Inc in Braintree, MA for over four years. I served on various committee; Executive, Finance, Public Relation, Program Development... etc. and have gained a full understanding of the operation of a non-profit, government-funded, thirteen million dollars, ASAP (Aging Services Access Point) elder service company in Massachusetts.
For more than ten months, I acted as the Director for the Rhode Island Association of Chinese American in Pawtucket, RI, planning services, recruiting and motivating volunteers, carrying out center operation, organizing community festival, teaching ESL classes and writing grant applications... etc.
I also worked briefly at the Massachusetts State Police, Forensic Services as a civilian employee, in the CODIS DNA division for six months, understanding the CODIS system, STR operation to develop the CODIS profiles from the mandated individuals per MGL chapter 22E, security and privacy protocol, LIMS, DNA collections and other policing tools for civilian employee.
As an IT consultant for many years and my strong interest in IT and computer science, I enjoy learning and mastering a wide range of subject and its associated knowledge. I understand the PC, its composition and functions, as well as its implications to society and humanity.
I am also an active holder of a Massachusetts Real Estate Salesperson license. Although I am not actively practicing residential and commercial sales and rental, I do keep up with market and housing trends.
Last but not the least, I have been serving as Massachusetts Notary Public for many years serving many populations, especially those with limited English ability. I have been a full time High School science teacher since 2009. Currently, I am teaching two CP and one Honor Chemistry in Dorchester Academy, one of Boston Public School District high school. In addition, I also teach a class of
Up to High School Level: $100/hr. Post Secondary Level: $125/hr Test Prep: $125/hr Group rates: Same, up to a maximum of four students. Reduced for LMI family and individual.
Although Mr. Y. just started helping my son, he has already won our trusts with his knowledge, patience and kindness! He is very experienced and work well with my teenaged son.
Dr. Jonathan is doing a great job with my son who is struggling with Organic Chemistry, often the subject that is the make it or break it. My son reports that he is very helpful and understanding. Thanks.
Jonathan was a great Chemistry Tutor. He was very patient and willing to meet almost any time or any place. When I wouldn't understand something, he would explain it in a different way until I understood. Without his help, I wouldn't have been able to succeed in AP Chemistry. He was very affordable too. I certainly recommend him to any student looking for chemistry tutoring in the Greater Boston Area.
Dr. Y was willing to meet me where I live, which I appreciated. He helped me understand what I needed to know for my Organic Chemistry class.
We have recently started working with Jonathan. He is tutoring my 15 yr. old daughter in Algebra 1&2. Jonathan is friendly and encouraging, a very pleasant person. At the same time, he is quite professional. He answers emails quickly, is on time to lessons, and is prepared and organized. My daughter understands what Jonathan is teaching and was very comfortable with him immediately. We are so pleased to have found him!
Jonathon was a great tutor for my son in HS physics. He was able to come last minute as my old tutor had moved. He was patient and very knowlegable in his field. Jonathon was always on time and worked well with my son. I would highly recommend him as a tutor. He was available many times we needed him as well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have twelve years of research and literature review related to chemical process and chemistry industry. I have knowledge of process improvement for synthesis, process scale up from milligram scale to kilogram scale. Also familiar with synthetic process development and improvement for making pharmaceuticals and biological active molecules in a multi-step process.
I received my PhD in Chemistry back in 1993. For the last few years, I taught chemistry and other science subjects at HS level in urban districts. I am familiar with many curricula and their different approaches to instruction and learning, and many chemistry lab techniques. I have extensive knowledge in chemistry from HS to graduate level.
I am a native of Hong Kong. I lived there until I finished my undergraduate and master's degree. I was trained in classic Chinese and live in it all my life. I speak fluent Mandarin and Cantonese. I use many romanization methods; pinyin, Jyutping, Cantonese, strokes... to write Chinese in electronic devices to communicate, teach and work. I have taught Mandarin occasionally before. I have many years' experience of Chinese-English translation and Interpretation.
I have taught both of my children for the ISEE and they had done well.
I have worked with children in Boston Public Schools taking the ISEE and their results are mostly satisfactory.
As a HS teacher for four years and PhD level of education, ISEE is a task relatively easy and I will be able to help students to master it.
I have earned my PhD degree from the Physical Science Division of the University of Chicago. Over thirteen years of practicing scientific research in chemistry and related subjects. I have help a lot of students in their studies of science at the pre-college and undergraduate level. As a strong exam taker myself, I help my tutoring students to employ many skills and strategies when they are taking important test, preparing for college and graduate studies.
