Hi everyone! I am a tutor in the fields of science, math, music, English, and standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, ISEE, etc.). (Due to COVID-19, my availability is restricted to only online lessons for the time being. Thanks for your understanding, and please stay healthy!)

I graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2011 and have been tutoring nearly full-time since I received my degree. For qualifications sake, I received my Bachelor's of Science in Music. I also completed a Massachusetts teaching education program while attending school, fulfilling a full practicum and set of required student teaching. Working internationally, I have also held classes in Seoul, South Korea, teaching chemistry, physics, and calculus. Additionally, I have volunteered with several disadvantaged youth tutoring programs and have tutored many friends and family over the past decade and more. I always find that the experience is mutually beneficial. Besides, it is said that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it!

I am located near Cambridge, MA and am willing to commute to get where I need to go. Normally, my tutoring sessions are held in a local library or school and last anywhere from 1-2 hours. I prefer when the student has some sort of workbook or guide that they would like to cover, but this is not required. Based upon the subject matter, we can develop a program that can meet on a regular basis (weekly, etc.) or in "chunks" to cover specific parts of the subject.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing the saxophone and keeping up with developments in the scientific community. I may also be in love with Taco Bell.

In addition to tutoring elementary students for many years, I have worked as both a math and English instructor for an after-school program designed for kids between 8-14 years of age. I've done extensive test prep for MCAS exams and have assigned and graded nearly every kind of book report, essay, and homework assignment in between.

Music History

Music history is a very expansive subject. However, I feel that the experiences that I have gained in both the classroom and in practice have left me well-versed to assist someone in need of understanding the subject more clearly. I have taken several courses devoted to the development of music over time. I will list these classes with a short description of their content. - Introduction to Western Music - an overview of forms and styles of Western classical music, with emphasis on the period of common practice (Baroque, Classical, Romantic), 1700-1910 - Early Music - history of Western music from antiquity until approximately 1680 (about 2000 years), focus topics included chant structure, performance, and development; 14th century music of Italy and France; Elizabethan London; and Venice in the Baroque era - Music of India - Hindustani classical music of North India, and also learning about the ancient foundations of the rich classical traditions of music and dance of all Indian art and culture - Senegalese Drumming Ensemble - instruction and practice of the art of sabar, a drum and dance tradition of the Wolof people of Senegal, West Africa - Music and Technology - the history, culture, and aesthetics of music and technology as deployed in experimental and popular musics from the 19th century to the present.

Saxophone

I have played the saxophone for over 10 years. I specialize in the alto but have also performed on the tenor. My experience not only covers instruction on how to play and learn proper key fingerings and embrouchure development but also appreciation in performance and how techniques are featured in practice.

High Recommendations for Joseph Diaz

Joseph arrived on time to help my daughter with her high school physics homework and to help her study for a physics test. Joseph was comfortable to be with and was very friendly. My daughter is much more confident in her understanding of physics after this tutoring session with Joseph.
