Hello! My name is John, and I am a U.S. Army Veteran who is enrolled at the University of Massachusetts in English and Creative Writing. Despite my education being in English, I am primarily a freelance artist with a focus on character design and comics. My goal for tutoring is to use the knowledge I have honed and gained to make my students' art and visual storytelling the best it can be, with aspects such as theories, techniques, and my overall experience with drawing.

During my time in the military, I needed to find a new hobby, and I decided to give drawing a try. I immediately fell in love with the craft and have been drawing every day since then. As a self-taught artist, consistent practice and constant reinforcement of fundamentals such as human anatomy, form, and perspective have become second nature in my daily life. My main mediums are pencil and pen, and our sessions will be on my iPad with the Procreate app.

My focus in art is comics, cartoons, and anime style, with my specific genres being in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror. However, I can also branch out and tutor in other areas, such as portraits, though I may not have as much expertise than I do with comics and visual storytelling.

With my degree being in English, I am also proficient at writing, specifically, creative writing. My proficiency is in fiction with a focus on the genres of Sci-Fi, Horror, and Drama. I use creative writing in comics and cartoons in order to reinforce visual storytelling with dialogue and narrative. I have taken part in many workshops and creative writing classes. I am more than happy to tutor you in aspects such as storytelling, form, genre, dialogue, and character.

Lastly, I believe that fun is the most important aspect of drawing above all else. It's what is most important in your artistic journey and with my tutoring. Not only do I want to be your tutor, but your mentor as well.

Lets start our journey together!

Great lesson!

This lesson was great and easy to understand. The Loomis method helps me see and understand the different planes and proportions of the face. Looking forward to applying this to different angles I typically struggle to draw!

Patient and knowledgeable tutor.

John is a very patient tutor, and takes the time to explain details. He did not mind when I wanted to ask follow up questions as well. It is clear that he is very skilled and experienced in drawing, especially in anatomy, which we went over in our lesson. He also recommended some drawing books, which was very helpful.

Great teacher!

I have done about 3 lesson so far with John and they have all been wonderful. We are focusing on the figure/human anatomy right now and he makes everything easy to understand by breaking the figure down into simple shapes and lines. It has helped me a lot with my form and perspective and we haven’t even gotten to that stage yet! Today we did the torso, the draw-along exercises we did gave me a greater understanding of the torso’s bone and muscle structure. Really great tutor, can’t wait to put what I’ve learned so far to use!
