Hi, my name is Ian! I'm a student at Harvard University concentrating in Economics and Government. I graduated high school as valedictorian with a 1600 SAT, and I've spent four years tutoring students in subjects including SAT and state standardized exam prep, college admissions, essay writing, algebra, AP Government + Politics, and AP Micro/Macroeconomics. I graduated high school as valedictorian with a 1600 SAT, and I've spent four years tutoring students in subjects including SAT and state standardized exam prep, college admissions, essay writing, algebra, AP Government + Politics, and AP Micro/Macroeconomics. I've taught in settings ranging from one-on-one library conference rooms to 100+ attendee Zoom meetings, in both paid and volunteer positions, with a typical student age range of late middle school through high school.

I think patience is extremely important for a tutor. I know firsthand how it feels to see someone getting frustrated when you don't understand a problem or concept, so I always make sure to adjust my pace for each individual student and check for understanding beyond a simple yes/no answer.

Some of my background knowledge on the topics I tutor comes from personal experience. My experience working on political campaigns, for example, comes in handy with AP Government. When it comes to college admissions and essay writing, I can tap into the entire semester of junior year I spent searching for every possible resource on college admissions I could find on the internet. I browsed college admissions forums on the bus to school, read college admissions ebooks during meals, and listened to college admissions podcasts during workouts; it was exciting and exhausting at the same time. I want to share with you the insights and intuition I gained during my college application season and save you time in the process!

College Counseling

College Counseling

I was an average high school student with no hooks (URM, First Gen, Low Income) that got accepted to all the schools I applied to, including Harvard and Yale. I was recently hired at a college coaching startup which chose its tutors from only Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Stanford, with a sub-10% acceptance rate among applicants from those schools. I also enjoy crafting narratives that bring a student's essays, extracurriculars, and transcript together to tell a story.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I wrote the Common App personal statement and over 50 supplemental essays during my college admissions process. Several admissions officers wrote in their comments that my personal statement was one of the committee's favorites that cycle. I also have multiple gold keys from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. I am interested in helping students to develop their own narratives or write in academic settings.
