Hello! My name is Drew. I hold a bachelor's degree in humanities from Harvard University. During my time as an undergraduate, I was involved in various extracurricular writing projects, including script writing and editing for student plays, local performances, and video projects. I also assisted prospective students with their college essays and supplements, with successfully completed applications to universities like Tufts, Boston University, Princeton, Georgetown, University of Rochester, and The University of Virginia.

Additionally, I have an in-depth knowledge of Shakespeare and Early Modern English. I am particularly excited to coach students in classic literature, guiding them through topics spanning the challenging language of Shakespeare, American literature, and classical literature. My primary approach is thematic analysis and close reading. I have worked with students on persuasive essay writing and developing literary analysis skills that have helped them succeed in their AP English Literature courses.

I aim to help students of all ages reach their full potential through highly personalized and engaging coaching. While I primarily coach AP and college-level essay writing, I am also confident in tutoring various subjects across the humanities, including creative writing, poetry analysis and composition, essay writing, philosophy, world history, and world religion. Additionally, I have experience tutoring students diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD.

Thank you for considering me as your tutor. If you have any questions, or wish to schedule a meeting, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Best,
Drew S.

Classics

I took two years of Latin in high school and continue to translate around this level as a hobby. As an undergraduate studying Humanities, I took several courses relating to Greek and Roman literature and philosophy. At Harvard, I took Prof. Nagy's Ancient Greek Hero course, where we read and worked with the works of Homer, Sappho, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Hesiod, Plato, and a few others. I passed this course with an A grade. I also took an introductory philosophy course and studied texts by Plato, Aristotle, Diogenes, Epicurus, and Marcus Aurelius. I have helped produced and performed in productions of The Bacchae, Electra, and Oedipus Rex. I have read the Iliad and Odyssey multiple times each, two translations of the former, three of the latter.

I’m an experienced English tutor with a deep passion for classic literature and a strong background in Shakespearean studies. Essay Writing

Essay Writing

My bachelor's degree is in humanities, with a specific focus on drama, philosophy, and religion. To earn this degree, most of my assignments were submitted in thesis essay format. As a tutor, I regularly read and edit essays for high school assignments, as well as for prospective students applying to college. To practice on my own time, I consistently write and publish essays on Substack, where I have about 200 regular readers per post. I also study each new edition of Harvard’s published successful admissions essays, along with the works of Montaigne, the credited inventor of the essay format.
Guitar

Guitar

I am almost 26 years old, I have played guitar since I was about 9 years old. Since then, it has been my primary and most diligent hobby. I still regularly practice for hours at a time. I also have published original music on SoundCloud and Spotify, and regularly play shows --both solo and accompanied-- around Cambridge, MA. I am most proficient in pop, rock, folk, and classical, with lesser experience in jazz and math rock styles.

As an experienced humanities tutor with a deep passion for classic literature, I have a strong background in literary composition and analysis. I possess an in-depth knowledge of Shakespeare, Western cornerstones like The Iliad, Odyssey, Hebrew and Christian bibles, medieval literature like Beowulf, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and the works of the Pearl Poet. I am also confident to guide students through the rich symbolism of American literature like Moby Dick, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Old Man and the Sea, as well as the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the sharp satire of Kurt Vonnegut, and the countercultural voices of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, and James Baldwin. My particular focus on close readings, and artistic analysis and expression in writing equips my students with the skills they need to excel in their literary studies. Under my guidance, my students have achieved top grades in AP English Literature courses.

Extremely Knowledgeable and Professional

I would like to thank to Drew for his incredible work with my daughter on her college personal statement and supplementals this fall. Because of his exceptional guidance and expertise, Drew made a profound impact, and I cannot recommend his services enough. Hiring him will not only help you write amazing essays, but significantly improve your long-term writing skills! I considered having my daughter work with two other tutors, but nobody provided exceptional guidance and expertise like Drew did. I do not usually write reviews but when someone’s work is extraordinary, they deserve to be recognized. If anyone reading this comment is on the fence about college counseling and essay help, this is your sign to reach out, I HIGHLY recommend his services! His services are knowledgeable, efficient, and professional. Drew did a fantastic job in the brainstorming process. During discussions, he went above and beyond for helping my daughter think outside the box and come up with the necessary content and constructive critique for getting my daughter to apply in full confidence. He was flexible with scheduling and my daughter absolutely loved his insights and constant encouragement. I could not ask for anyone better for college counseling.

Great college counseling tutor.

I had a great experience working with Drew on my college transfer essays. With limited time before my deadline, he helped me bring together my ideas into a final draft, and also made additional revisions outside of our meetings. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for expert help with the college admissions process!
