I first began tutoring almost a decade ago as a high school student when I worked with three middle school students over a three year period. In my capacity as a general education tutor I covered all of the major subjects and met with each student twice each week. As a result of our strong working relationship, each student maintained a 90+ average throughout their middle school years. In addition, I also worked during my senior year second semester of high school as an assistant English teacher at an underserved Catholic elementary school in Harlem, and also helped prepare those same students for the TACHS and HSPT exams.
My tutoring work continued in college where I worked as writing workshop tutor at Williams, workshopping essays with dozens of students throughout my junior and senior year. In addition, I also worked for a non-profit called Matriculate helping high-achieving, low-income students navigate the college admissions process. It was in this role that I mentored three high school students over a two-year period, working with them to complete their admissions essays and prepare for the SAT/ACT. All three were highly successful in the process and ended up matriculating at Georgetown, Fordham, and Ohio State.
My tutoring philosophy is simple: I try to meet students where they are. Every student has unique goals, and so it is important for tutors to understand their student’s specific objectives early on. In this, it is important to set aims that are both attainable and bespoke, rather than imposing the same academic expectations on every student.
