Hello! I'm Sam, and I am an educator from San Jose, California. Currently, I teach math, ELA, and music theory to both high schoolers and middle schoolers at a private therapeutic school in Watertown, Massachusetts.
My academic background is in the humanities, specifically political science. I studied international affairs and economics in college, where I also wrote for the campus newspaper in my free time. As a college student, I tutored SAT and ACT math with Varsity Tutors (one-on-one) for a year before graduating and moving to Boston in 2024. I taught pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry to small groups of Boston middle schoolers for the 2024-2025 school year through Americorps. Since I myself am a visual learner, I often used Quizizz and an online curriculum called Zearn during my tutoring sessions to ensure that my students could effectively internalize the concepts that I taught.
As a tutor, the most important aspects of any educator-student relationship is trust and engagement. I make sure to tailor any lesson plan to the student(s) that I am teaching and match the pacing of the session to their individual needs. Before delving into the specifics of a new subject, I prefer to establish a connection with the student and reach a point of mutual respect.
