About Matthew

Bio

Let me introduce myself: my name is Matthew Weiss, I'm a 4th year PhD student at UMass Boston, and I'm very excited to be your tutor. I absolutely love teaching, and I'm a big believer in personalized education and individualized study: nothing beats having a one-on-one session with an actual human being invested in your future, who can figure out where you're at and help you get where you need to go.

In my research as a graduate student, I explore the fascinating mathematics behind quantum mechanics, our most successful theory of physics. As such, I'm well equipped to be your guide through basic algebra and geometry, pre-calculus and calculus, as well as linear algebra. That's just on the mathematics side: I can also get you up to speed in physics, from classical mechanics, thermodynamics, and beyond. I've taught several continuing education courses in physics through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and for years, I ran the "Brooklyn Quantum Meetup," an online gathering of amateurs interested in learning physics outside of an academic setting, so I have a great deal of experience meeting students at whatever level they happen to find themselves.

I took a circuitous path to mathematical physics: in fact, as an undergraduate, I attended Brown University and majored in Literary Arts! I also have an MFA in Fiction from the Iowa Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa, where I taught English classes and led creative writing seminars. As such, I can also help you nail your grammar questions, revise your essays, improve your vocabulary, and your ability to close read texts. Moreover, I've informally helped students improve their SAT and GRE scores, as well as their college essays, and hopefully I can help you too!

Whether you're a middle-schooler just starting to diagram sentences or solve equations, a high-schooler trying to wrap their minds around sines and cosines, or an undergraduate trying to find the eigenvalues of a matrix, I'm excited to meet you and develop a plan for the future.
