Qualifications for “Math”

Tutoring Statistics, typically to high school Seniors and College Freshmen. I help them better understand their classroom lessons, by discussing the material, answering and asking questions, doing homework together, reviewing material, teaching missed classes, extending their thinking. Especially, I help them move from dry statistics to much more interesting applications to their own interest, such as business, sports, nursing, criminal justice, anthropology, international relations, etc.

I'm a high school math teacher and tutor, MA licensed and certified, tutoring students at grades 9-12. I'm a good teacher, listen and explain things well, enjoy teens and am patient and understanding. I have excellent tutoring references. I am the father of 3 teens, and have been a soccer coach, youth group leader, and scouting leader. I am also an engineering and business professional with BS and MS degrees.

I tutor Algebra, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Algebra 2, Analysis, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Physics. Seasonally I work with students on SAT preparation, which I love and excel at. I have worked successfully with students of all abilities, from Honors to Summer School.

I work in Acton and Concord and surrounding towns, (Stow, Boxborough, Harvard, Sudbury, Maynard, Littleton) and along the Route 2 corridor, including Harvard, Lancaster, Ayer. Or anywhere, by Zoom!

Please contact me for questions or to setup an initial brief meeting, so I can learn your student's needs and your objectives, and for you and your student to see if it's a good fit. Discounted rates are available if your household income is less than the Median household income.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have 5 years of experience teaching high school math including Algebra 1, and have tutored dozens of Algebra students one-on-one. Algebra is such a fundamental skill for all further math courses, that it really needs to be mastered. And to do so, students need to have solid capabilities from earlier pre-algebra years, such as with arithmetic, fractions, decimals, negative numbers. I assess those abilities early in our sessions together, and incorporate practice as needed. Then students are more successful in learning the so-important skills in Algebra such as solving equations and inequalities, graphing functions, factoring, solving word problems. I make sure they master the Algebra topics, and often while relating them to each student's own interest such as sports, music, gaming, dance, or possible career path, and occasionally using on-line drills and games for fun and skill-building. My students improve their mastery, confidence, and grades.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have 5 years of experience teaching high school math including Algebra 2, and have tutored dozens of Algebra 2 students one-on-one. A frequent downfall of students in Algebra 2 is weakness on fundamentals from earlier grades, such as in equation solving, graphing, working with negative numbers, fractions, and exponents. I look at these skills early in our sessions together, and incorporate strengthening exercises as needed. Then we can more successfully access Algebra 2 topics without continually tripping when solving problems in such topics as Quadratic and Polynomial Functions and Inequalities, Trigonometry, Conic Sections, Rational Expressions and Equations, Exponential and Logarithmic relations. I have a good track record of raising students' skills and grades.
Calculus,

Calculus

I am an experienced high school math teacher, and engineer, and have been tutoring math and Calculus for 7 years. I have helped more than a dozen students in Calculus so far, of varying levels from introductory, AP Calculus, to College Freshman Calculus. "Excellent Tutor! Steve is an amazing find! I have been looking for a knowledgeable tutor to help my son with his honors calculus and honors physics. Steve was extremely knowledgeable! He was a great aid in helping my son work through the material he has been studying. "
Geometry,

Geometry

I have 5 years of experience teaching high school Geometry, and have tutored dozens of Geometry students one-on-one. Students are 1st introduced to the use of logic in high school geometry, and this is a new skill to develop, and essential to complete proofs. This is the biggest help I give Geometry students - I have them approach a problem both from the conclusion, working backward ("for this to be true, what do I need? How can I get that?") and forward ("Given this, what does it do for me? And what else can I get from it? How does it link to what I need?"). I have THEM talk out the problem using this logic, with a little coaching, until they have solved it, and then they can write proofs with ease. I also enhance learning and test performance by understanding just where students are often weak, and making sure they have solid skills in the many Geometry topics such as Parallel Lines & Angles, Transformations, Right Triangles and Trigonometry, Circles, Sectors, Tangents, etc.
Physics,

Physics

I have a deep understanding of physics from my education and work as an engineer, and have tutored more than 2 dozen students in Physics, so far. Students seem to have the most trouble in a few areas: -In mechanics, after studying motion in 1 and 2 dimensions, force, and friction, then analyzing complex motion problems such as objects on an incline, using pulleys, or with multiple forces. -Electrical circuits with multiple branches. -Understanding & working with myriad new units of measure (Newtons, Joules, Coulombs, Watts, Volts, Amps, etc). I help students with a more organized and thoughtful approach to problem solving, and to develop a deeper understanding and insight into the big ideas in Physics (and have raised grades as a result).
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have 5 years of experience as a High School Math teacher, depth in math topics in Calculus and beyond from my education and work as an engineer, and have tutored 2 dozen or more Precalculus students one-on-one. Precalculus is both preparation for a following calculus course, AND often a last course in discrete math, so it covers a wide range of topics, some of which are not specifically useful to calculus (such as probability and combinatorics). It relies on solid skills from previous courses in Algebra 1 and 2. I find that students are often challenged in precalculus by the depth of thought, longer procedures, new material not seen in earlier courses, and by their need to use skills from earlier courses such as in function analysis and graphing, equation solving, exponents and logarithms. I work with them to gain understanding of the new material, and to successfully apply a wide range of necessary skills, increasing their mastery, confidence, and grades.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I have been successfully helping student prepare for, and improved their performance, on the SAT math sections for 10+ years. Your student will be working one-on-one with me on SAT problems of exactly the type(s) they most need to practice. We will establish goals and a rough timeline before we start. We will work together using problems from College Board's (the SAT test publisher) official practice partner, Khan Academy. Your student can do extra prep in between sessions if they have the time and motivation, or work just during our sessions. While a big-name SAT prep company may have a class with nice 'packaging', they won't work effectively with your student's individual strengths and weaknesses like I will. Your student won't sit and sleep through a class lecture, they will be working one-on-one with me on SAT problems of exactly the type(s) they most need to practice. An 800 score is within reach!

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

Trigonometry starts out nice and easy in the early high school years, with introductions to similar triangles, ratios, and the classic "SOHCAHTOA definitions of the Trigonometric Functions. Then ramps up into the isosceles right an 30°-60°-90° Triangles. Likely no problems here, but then a good teacher or tutor can be needed! As Trig gets more serious, probably in a Precalculus class, students are Solving Right Triangles, learning and applying Laws of Cosines Sines, making sense of the Unit Circle, radian measure, Coterminal angles, Polar coordinates, Graphs of the trigonometric functions, Inverse functions. Students finally get frustrated when simplifying and solving weird expressions and equations with Trig identities, some of which seem impossible. I help students make sense of it all, help with homework by giving individual and real time tips, give extra practice where needed, help them understand WHY it might be useful. Over time, frustration goes down while grades go up!

Fantastic Tutor

My son was behind due to missing school as a result of being ill. Steve was knowledgeable and got him caught up quickly to finish the semester strong. Without Steve, I’m not sure what we would have done. He went the extra mile to find out what resources were need so my child could be successful. We are continuing to use him and would highly recommend him to anyone having a challenge. The fee paid is higher but well worth it

Tutor responded:

Thank you Tammi - I have been so happy to be able to help!

Very thoughtful, kind, and helpful

We found Steve last year for a few sessions of Algebra 1 help when my children moved to a school district where the curriculum was more advanced than their previous school. He really helped with the material as well as boosting their confidence. This year in geometry, after a very disappointing quiz score in the thick of that very thorny chapter of proofs, my daughter remembered Steve from last year. In one meeting, Steve assessed her approach and weak areas and helped her develop a “strategy,” as my daughter put it, or a logical plan of attack, for the proofs in the end of chapter test. This not only helped with her technique, but it was also great for her confidence going into the test. The result was amazing; my daughter was thrilled. We both whole-heartedly recommend finding Steve for help and will be back again when the next big challenge crops up.

Excellent tutor

Excellent Professional and communication skills. Highly qualify of teaching. Very positive feedback from student. My daughter had struggled algebra 1 for a while. We would like to know why she can not get improvement we like to get after we helped her with extra materials to practice. Steve is able to identify the weaknesses and come up the plan to help. Just two seasons so far, my daughter seems very helpful.

Knowledgeable and engaging tutor!

My daughter really enjoys working with Steve. He is very knowledgeable about all things geometry, which is particularly helpful for my daughter who really wants to understand the material on a deep level and have all her questions answered thoroughly. He is very easy to work with and organized. He connects well with teens and is very personable. My daughter looks forward to every session. I can't recommend him highly enough!

Great tutor for teens

Steve is tutoring my son in Geometry. He is patient, a good communicator and is genuinely interested in meeting my son where he is to help him. My son said that Steve has inspired him to care about his performance. I think this is due to increased confidence.

Enriching and thought-provoking

We covered some circles and secants and tangents in preparation for the midterm. We even covered an exercise with angle measurements in circles. Steve was very patient and helpful while giving thought-provoking challenges. All in all, it was very informative and productive session.
