About Tom

Bio

I am a nationally certified tutor and I currently teach and tutor at a local college in Columbus, Ohio.

I have been tutoring students in math (all levels), English (all levels), history (all levels), all social sciences (political science, sociology, philosophy, and psychology), English as a Second Language, and especially ACT (math, science reasoning, reading, English, and writing), and SAT (math and English) for more than 20 years by reducing learning anxiety and "simply getting the point...

I am a nationally certified tutor and I currently teach and tutor at a local college in Columbus, Ohio.

I have been tutoring students in math (all levels), English (all levels), history (all levels), all social sciences (political science, sociology, philosophy, and psychology), English as a Second Language, and especially ACT (math, science reasoning, reading, English, and writing), and SAT (math and English) for more than 20 years by reducing learning anxiety and "simply getting the point and application(s) across" in a relaxing, yet effective manner.

I am also a semi-retired senior professor. Before deciding to retire from full-time teaching at a major university, I taught the following subjects for 23 years: Economics (all levels); Finance (all levels); Math (all levels); Business Operations; Business Strategy; Business Math; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving; Political Science; Ethics; Introduction to Business; and Leadership/Motivation.

I currently divide my tutoring time between the following grade levels: Grades 1 through 6 = 20%; Middle School/Junior High School = 20%; High School = 30%; and ACT/SAT = 30%.

As a parent, professor, experienced tutor, and life-long learner, I understand (and practice) the essential differences between teaching and tutoring. Although they share some similarities, they are different in terms of learning strategy, knowledge retention, and information application.

My purpose for tutoring is not to supplement my income. I attained my wealth many years ago. I've never cared about social status.

Now, for me, it's primarily a matter of having students "get it!"

"Getting it" simply means the following to different students/parents: passing an exam; passing a lab; "catching up" when classes have been missed; "catching up" when a student has fallen behind; actually understanding the application(s) of specific material; improving ACT/SAT scores to enter a specific college/university or gain a specific academic scholarship/grant.

And so it goes...

Thank you!

Very high powered and motivating instructor

Very nice and smart teacher very helpful and I highly recommend him. He took the time to explain anything I asked of him. He was very easy to follow and made sure that I understood each topic and went over them again if I asked him to. I would definitely have him again as a tutor. I learned a lot more than I anticipated I would.

Skill & Professionalism Beyond Compare!

"Tommy" currently tutors both of our foster sons, both of whom have obstacles to overcome academically; within minutes of meeting the boys Tommy was able to both connect with each on a personal level and engage them in a way that made the subject matter interesting and exciting. We could not be happier with his approach, techniques, patience, empathy, and RESULTS!!! Kirby & Tom Reynoldsburg, OH

Tom is a tutor that tailors to your needs

Tom came to our first session ready to tutor "me". He was prepared to tutor a business professional, new to consulting, and looking for help with creative writing. He is insanely brilliant, but focuses and knows to speak directly to his audience and their needs. When the session began, he explained how creative thinking and writing will help with my approach to clients. He taught me to think outside the box as one way to think creatively and have conversations with clients. For instance, using the anatomy and math to draw parallels to the business world. Tom taught me to leverage skills and education from my past, and things others will know and remember, to develop these skills. Tom also took the time to read through example work I had on hand. He gave me direct feedback (good and bad) along with solutions on how to better my writing, such as the Literacy Definition book. Even though I went in needing help with creative writing, I left with so much more. Everything we discussed was relevant to my line of work and I'm so excited to go to the library to read up on the books we discussed. I look forward to meeting with Tom again! Our next session is on grammar and I look forward to the insight he has to provide and how I can better myself even more.

ACT

Tom did a wonderful job tutoring my son Zach for the ACT. He helped him to understand how too look at the question and understand what they are looking for. Plus so much more. My son has a better understanding now for looking at test questions. I would high recommend Tom for ACT tutoring.

Great Tutor

My son never had to do much studying until he got to high school and found that he didn't really know how to study or how to do it efficiently. Tom has given him tips and strategies to help keep him focused on the task at hand. He has helped him tremendously in just the 3+ hours they have spent together. My son already seems more confident and proud of the work he is doing.

Very patient

Tom is doing an amazing job tutoring my 3rd grade son. My son has issues focusing and staying on task. Often times he drifts off and Tom is very patient with him. He gets him back on track. He never makes my son feel bad for getting an answer wrong, so this has boosted his confidence tremendously. Tom tutored him all summer and my 3rd grader is having an awesome start to the year! I am very pleased and grateful for Tom's help!

Great at connecting with the student.

Tom has done a great job at figuring out how to best connect and then communicate with our son to optimize his learning.

My son felt like the sessions were very beneficial.

Helped him with the review of ACT and the tricks of interpreting the test. Will use Tom again for help with my younger son.

Tommy G. gets an A+

We have had a wonderful experience with Tommy G. Not only did my son enjoy his 2 hours sessions with Tommy (imagine that!), he really appreciated all of the knowledge and strategy tips Tommy was able to share. My son's score increased by 4 points and we couldn't be happier. My son had had a few sessions with other tutors and the big difference between Tommy and the others was that Tommy was able to give him tips and strategies that would give him the biggest bang for the buck when it came to the test. as apposed to a bunch of homework he had to bring home and read and do before the next session. For the most part, everything my son learned he learned within the two hour tutor sessions. He didn't have to come home and do more work, which would have been hard to find the time for and would have been like pulling teeth to get him to do on top of all of his regular school homework. We give Tommy G. and A+.

The Best

We are extremely fortunate to have Tom tutor our daughter. Tom's teaching method is fundamentally based on making kids think about real life applications of math and English concepts. This is something that is very difficult to observe in our current school systems.
