I am a Board Eligible genetic counselor with a master's degree in genetic counseling from the University of Connecticut. My current role as a genetic counselor allows me to provide empathetic, psychologically empowering information about complex medical and scientific concepts daily. This translates into my work as a tutor, where I help students to excel in their coursework and feel confident in their ability to apply content in novel ways. My background at the University of Missouri, where I earned my bachelor's of science in biochemistry is where I truly found my love of teaching that has stuck with me to now. Throughout my undergraduate education and graduate training I honed my skills as a science communicator, including peer tutoring for biochemistry courses and professional tutoring for many science subjects.

As a tutor, I have been able to use my advanced knowledge of genetics and related medical conditions to help students make meaning of seemingly abstract scientific concepts and find success in their coursework. Utilizing student-led tutoring sessions, through asking questions and starting with what the student does know, sets me apart from other tutors. I engage in active listening to support students better in a way that is more effective than lecturing at them. I also have experience working with younger students in my volunteer work and have learned the power of adaptability and working with the student and their families to best achieve their goals. I am always open to suggestions, resources, and constructive feedback to suit the student's needs. I look forward to working with you!

Great Tutor

Tutor is very helpful and respectful when reviewing material. Tutor welcomes questions where I never felt judged or nervous to ask to for them to reexplain a topic. She was able to explain topics in multiple ways if I did not understand something the first time and even provided creative analogies or examples on the subject matter so it would stick better. Highly recommend.

amazing tutor!

Heater was great! She broke everything down into simpler terms. This really helped ease my anxiety as a student who has a past of struggling with Chemistry. Highly recommend!

The best tutor!

Heather really helped me through undergrad Biochem. She knows the concepts well and really cares to make sure you understand (has many clear images and diagrams at the ready) and will adjust to what works best for you the student! Heather's enthusiasm and patience made me comfortable enough to ask about any confusions and encouraged me to critically think and connect concepts. Seriously learned so much from her that I couldn't have gotten from lecture
