About Teresa

Bio

I have been a professionally exhibiting artist and educator for more than twenty years. I love seeing students of all ages gain an understanding of their own abilities and realize heights they thought unattainable. I often tell my students that I don't think of myself as teaching a subject matter but rather, I think of myself as teaching people "how to think". Once a student knows HOW to find answers, they are unstoppable!

I have worked in a Boys and Girls Club as a first and second grade homework leader and art teacher, I have taught public middle school art and humanities, and I have instructed studio art classes at the College Level including drawing, two dimensional design, sculpture, photography, hand built and wheel thrown ceramics.

I have shown my own art in major cities across the United States and Europe. Presently I continue to make art and volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club while I help my daughter care for her young family (a two year old son, and six year old daughter)

I have held public education certification in Illinois and Kentucky (which I no longer maintain), and have coached track and field, cross country, and soccer in school and community programs. (In 2002, I was named the journal courier's track coach of the year, for a high school girl's team).

I am looking for a teaching opportunity that provides flexibility in schedule because of care taking my grandchildren, and also, perhaps, allows for the building of long-term educational connections between small groups of students. This is why I am choosing to tutor instead of teaching in an educational facility.

Approved Subjects

Art

Painting,

Painting

My undergraduate degree in studio art has its emphasis in painting. While my own art work has evolved to be more drawing, painting and color theory often work its way into my medium. I have worked with students using all types of paint. I understand the make up and use of tempera, watercolor, acrylic, and oil paints. I teach students to use the proper tools for the paint, as well as the best mixing and application techniques. Painting is and advanced artistic action, often followed by knowledge of color theory, the ability to draw and deciding on an interesting composition. Students can be quickly assessed as to their previous knowledge and proficiency and begin painting at a level at which they are comfortable.
Photography

Photography

In 2010 and 2011 I developed a pinhole photography workshop for High School and Middle School Gifted and Talented Art students. The students learned how cameras capture an image and record it on the film. The students then made their own pinhole cameras from cardboard boxes and developed their images in a makeshift wet lab studio. My formal teaching experience in photography began at a college (2001 to 2005) where I taught analogue photography classes to adult students, maintained darkroom and chemicals. I next taught Photo I, Photo II and Advanced Photography at community college in 2009.

Soccer

I have been a soccer mom for years, taking over duties as community soccer coach when my daughters outgrew the age limitation. I worked in Chicago for a program called "After School Matters". My duties included teaching soccer skills/rules to inner city youth so they would have the knowledge that would make them eligible to apply for jobs with the summer soccer program at the City of Chicago Parks District.
Track & Field

Track & Field

I was an assistant coach for a high school track and field team for nine years and head coach of the same team for three. I was named "coach of the year" by the local newspaper the last year I coached. I have competed as a distance runner, and have also coached cross country for men and women at the college level.
