For the past 7 years, I have been teaching business professionals and entrepreneurs in Taiwan and the U.S.. I have also taught IELTS to college students who were preparing to study abroad. Most of my classes were one-on-one, which gave me the opportunity to focus on the specific needs of each student.

However, I have also taught group classes which covered English business skills such as meetings, presentations, and emails. Although most of my students have been adults, I have also taught some children.

I love teaching English and helping my students to progress. When they realize that they have made progress and have gained confidence in using the language, I feel rewarded. Therefore, I provide a "safe" learning environment.

Since I am also learning Mandarin Chinese, I understand the challenges that learning a second language presents. (You should hear some of the mistakes I've made!) My goal is to help my students reach their English proficiency goals in their professional and/or personal life.

As an English teacher, I have learned through experience how to help my students overcome the 3 main areas of difficulty in English grammar - verb tenses, articles and prepositions. I have help other students prepare for both the general and academic IELTS and TOEFL exams.

This preparation included building vocabulary, high level grammar, listening skills, speaking (conversation and Q & A), reading comprehension, and writing, including simple, complex and compound sentence structure, as well as adverbial clauses, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. I also cover test taking tips and advice on how to avoid common grammar mistakes. My reading instruction includes shadowing, which helps students to improve their pronunciation.

My class times include morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Although most of my students hav

Public Speaking

I have both given public speeches and taught others how to speak in public. Not only did I take speech classes in school, but I also gave presentations when I was in the corporate world. Furthermore, I'm enrolled in a school where I give a presentation of 2-6 minutes in front of an audience about every 3 months. Once, I even gave an interview in front of an audience of over 5,000. Not only can I teach speech skills, such as pitch, power and pace, but I can also tell you how to deal with the nervousness. Body language is also important. I demonstrate both good and bad body language. Furthermore, I supplement my lesson with examples of effective speeches from Ted Talks.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I am a TESOL (Teaching English as a Second or Other Language) certified teacher with over 6 years experience teaching business professionals and college student. My classes always focus on the individual student's specific needs. Homework is provided to help my students apply and retain the information they are learning. I also have experience in helping students prepare for exams, such as TOEFL and IELTS.
Grammar,

Grammar

As I teach English, I listen to each student's grammar and provide help where they need it. The areas of English grammar that most people struggle with are; verb tenses, articles and prepositions. Of course, I also provide help with conjunctions/transitionals, adverbs, uncountable nouns, collocations, etc. I don't teach grammar without first hearing or seeing a need for it. I don't want to teach what a student already knows. However, grammar is the building block of any language.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

While teaching English to business professionals in Taiwan, I proofread correspondence including email, as well as proposals which were submitted to their clients. As I helped my students to improve their writing, I also proofread and helped them correct short essays. Some of my students where also changing jobs, so I proofread and helped them improve their resumes. My corrections included proper punctuation. Also, due to my proficiency in the English language, any errors or inconsistencies tend to just jump out at me as I read.

Although most people seem to prefer typing, there's a reason why pens and pencils still exist. On those occasions, when we do need to write a note to someone, we need to make sure that's it's legible. With that in mind, I can teach the three components of handwriting; letter formation (form and slant), size and spacing. How you hold the pencil and position the paper is also important. Reading,

Reading

Ever since I was a child, I have loved to read. When my mother would tell me it was bedtime, and that I needed to turn out the lights, I would get my flashlight out and continue reading my book under the covers. As an adult, I am still an avid reader. I read monthly publications that contain articles about current events, personal experiences, how things are designed, interesting places in the world, etc. I also follow the works of my favorite secular author, Alexander McCall Smith. You may have hear of his famous series, "The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency". I enjoy sharing my love of reading with others!
Spelling,

Spelling

Once upon a time, before spell check and online dictionaries, my coworkers and friends called me Walking Webster. Also, even though it was some time ago, I won the 8th grade spelling bee. As I learned along the way, there are spelling rules and exceptions to the rules. The exceptions are often because English borrows a lot of loanwords from other languages, especially European languages. We won't always have access to spell check or a dictionary APP, so spelling skills are still important.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a teacher, I always encourage my students to read. It's a great way to build vocabulary. If students enjoy what they are reading, it makes learning new vocabulary enjoyable. Seeing the words in context also serves as a memory aid. Another way I help students build vocabulary is by explaining word families. For example, the verb "explain" is related to the noun "explanation". Lists of related words and phrases can also be effective. Whatever method works best for each student, it's extremely important to keep building vocabulary when learning a new language. That vocabulary includes idioms, expressions, quotes and collocations.

When in college, I had a short story published that I wrote in my English Literature class. I also wrote an essay in my Film and Society class about the movie Armageddon which the professor asked if he could show to future students as an example of how to analyze a movie and relate it to what is happening in society at that time. In my technical writing class, I wrote procedural steps and explanations of how products are designed. Therefore, I have experience in several different writing styles.

Bible Studies

Not only have I been an avid Bible reader since childhood, but I have also spent many hours teaching others from both the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures, including prophecies that are given in the Hebrew Scriptures and fulfilled in the Greek Scriptures. I myself continue to study the Bible. In fact, I attend a Life and Ministry Meeting every week which provides instruction on teaching methods. Although I firmly believe in the Bible, I realize that some people study it for it's literary value; illustrations, word pictures, analogies, comparisons and psalms (poetic songs). Either way, I love to help others become more familiar with the most widely distributed book in human history.
