I love teaching and look forward to sharing and promoting the fascination and wonder of the sciences with young minds everywhere, one student at a time, and have thoroughly enjoyed spending hundreds of hours discussing science with both teens and adults through WyzAnt. Teaching is second nature for me, growing up in a family where both parents were high school teachers. My father taught Biology for 30 years, which helped fuel my passion and enthusiasm for the sciences and motivated my pathway to a B.S. in Biology from Purdue University.

Rewardful teaching begins with a passion and energy for the subject matter. It requires detailed preparation, careful listening, patience, solid communication, and genuine care for the student’s success, in addition to a great command and understanding of the material. Vibrant visual aids and modern, real-world examples help keep students engaged and interested even when discussing challenging material. However, it’s key to tailor and adapt the teaching style to the strengths, weaknesses, and goals of each student and build their confidence--we work together.

Spending a decade as an Illinois-Licensed Physician Assistant honed my teaching skills, especially in one-on-one settings. Patient education is an essential concern in the medical field. When patients enter clinics with diverse science backgrounds, it forces healthcare providers to create and develop alternative methods of teaching the same science topics to ensure that every patient who walks in has a good understanding and explanation of their condition.

Feel free to browse my background and student feedback for a better understanding and feel for my work with WyzAnt students.

Biology

I am well versed in all biology topics, my knowledge derived from a B.S. in biology from Purdue University and then adding twenty more hours of post-graduate coursework in biology from ISU. My medical training from The University of Iowa College of Medicine enhanced my understanding of biology's concepts and provided real world applications for my science education. In my spare time, I've complemented my science background with numerous science courses from nearly all of the local colleges and have thoroughly enjoyed spending hundreds and hundreds of hours teaching the concepts of standard High School Biology, AP Biology, and college-level biology through Wyzant, plus preparation for May's AP Biology Exam and the SAT Subject Bio Exam. Last year Four of my long-term students earned "5's" on The AP Bio Exam in May, while another Eight students earned "4's" !

Knowledgeable and patient

I had my first lesson with David and he was very helpful. He explained pathology and pharmacology of antibiotics to me in a way that was very easy to understand. David was patient, and provided examples that were easy to remember. I recommend him to anyone struggling with this subject matter.

Amazing Simmons Pharm Tutor!

I did tutoring with David for Pharm 1 with Simmons and did amazing! For perspective--the first test I took was without any tutoring and got an 86. The next two tests I received tutoring and got a 94 and 96. He is honestly very knowledgeable and gives great visuals for visual learners like myself. I highly recommend him!

David is a superb Pharmacology tutor!

David is great. He makes the material relatable and gives real-world examples. He's upbeat and very pleasant to work with. I highly recommend him. I am taking Pharmacology at Simmons College and he has been a huge help with putting the pieces together; i.e., giving visual anchors, descriptive explanations that clarify concepts, etc. If you are taking this class, you know it can be overwhelming. So, these tutoring sessions with David have been invaluable to me.
