Bio

I am certified to edit by the University of Illinois at Chicago and I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I helped my peers with their writing pieces through the writing center at UIC. The class I took while volunteering at the writing center helped me come up with techniques for helping students learn how to write well. The class helped with how to tackle issues and in what order issues should be handled. I have been tutoring students of all ages since 2012...

I have been tutoring students of all ages since 2012 with lots of successful feedback.

I am patient, I love writing, and I love helping people. Writing is my passion; helping writers is my calling.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for every job I've ever held (since 2012). For my last job that I was at for 6 years, I was the "go-to" person to fix everyone's MS Outlook problems. It's similar structure to MS Office makes it easy to remember how to adjust the settings to whatever people need it to do.

I majored in English and the Rhetorical Arts. I read constantly and I edit every day. I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and freelance edit as well. I know how to tutor reading out loud and how to help students read silently to themselves.

I tutored my peers in college through a tutoring class and I have actually been teaching study skills already, without even realizing it. I also help my younger siblings with their homework (since junior high and they are in college now). My current students are showing definite progress. I just now noticed I wasn't actually certified by WyzAnt.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

I read every single day and I have Merriam Webster as my home page. I look at the Word of the Day every single day. I have several vocabulary builder books and reference them. Every word has a specific nuance. I have learned that drawing a picture in connection with the word helps memorize definitions.

I have a bachelor's degree in English and the rhetorical arts and had a 3.4 major GPA when I graduated. I still edit and read every day. I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and freelance edit as well.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

My first method for tutoring ACT Reading skills is to use the teacher manual. After we KNOW The correct answer, we work backwards to find out why the other answers are wrong. This method decreases frustration. My second method is time management. Many issues come from stress when it comes to time management. Every two minutes or so, I interrupt the student's reading and say, "That's two minutes, just breathe." By saying the same thing, it creates a trigger word that decreases stress. Hopefully, when I'm not physically there and the student feels stressed, they will hear my voice saying, "just breathe" and they will relax. My third method is to determine a student's vocabulary. I have the student read the practice passage and circle any words they don't know, can't pronounce or just don't make sense. Then I show the student how to "play detective" and find clues for what the meaning could be.

Writing

Writing

My process for tutoring writing is to determine what stage the writing is in--if the writing is started or if we need to brainstorm. I ask important questions such as "Who is the intended audience?" and "Is there a prompt or theme?" After those things are determined, we can work on organization and order of thoughts. Grammar and spelling would be the finishing touches. I would also point out positive things as I found them in the paper, such as good description or a clever point. Staying positive is always important.

Excellent Language Art Skill

My son was liking Language Arts low to moderately, Brittany has developed that interest within him. She goes through my son’s study plan in very detail and as per the requirements. Brittany is very much flexible in rescheduling on certain occasions where because of health or other reasons my son couldn’t attend. I have seen a good progress within my son. He is liking the subject, he has developed interest and also he has developed skills. I am sure in this summer he would learn a lot and will move ahead. Thanks Brittany for all your effort and time! Appreciate! Best regards- Pabitra

Awesome!

When we were able to set up lessons with Brittany for our daughter to prepare for the ACT we were so happy-she came highly recommended by a friend. The other night our daughter came home and said Brittany is going to help her with scholarship stuff also! That's awesome!

Motivating and Encouraging

Brittany is a motivating and an encouraging tutor. She makes me feel comfortable and challenges me to speak up and be confident in expressing myself as a writer. A great thing about her, she encourages instead of informs. She continues to help me become an effective writer.
