(University of Texas at Austin (PhD)
I have been teaching Spanish at the college and high school levels at schools such as DePaul University, North Park College and Loyola Academy for 16 years and have a PhD in Hispanic Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. Moreover, I hold a Bilingual Type 29 teaching certificate from the State of Illinois.
My tutoring students have met with success, including one at New Trier who went from a C last year to an A this year, and another who was getting Ds on his exams and who now consistently gets 90s on assessments and who received a B on the mid-term exam.
Currently I am enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University in the Education program, which has required that my background (using fingerprints) be checked twice in the last 12 months.
Along with Spanish, I enjoy teaching math to girls, especially Pre-Algebra and Algebra, because I like to show them that women ARE good at math.
Standardized tests have been easy for me to take and explain, and I have received very high scores on many standardized tests (GRE, SAT, ACT, Basic Skills, etc.) For example, when I took the Basic Skills test I scored a perfect 300 in both Math and Writing. Because I have taken that teaching exam, I enjoy tutoring potential teachers and social workers for the TAP test.
I look forward to tutoring you or your child! I have been teaching Spanish at the college and high school levels at schools such as DePaul University, North Park College and Loyola Academy for 16 years and have a PhD in Hispanic Literature from the University of Texas at

Beth has done a very nice job with our high school freshman son. He was struggling in Spanish and Beth has helped make a huge difference in his confidence, performance, and grades. She is very organized and ensures there is a good, productive study plan in place for each session. We are very happy to have Beth working with our son.
Beth tutored honors geometry summer school for our child attending Loyola Academy. Beth was very flexible and added time when needed to ensure there was sufficient time to cover the material. Beth was easy to reach and responsive. The volume of material covered was extensive given the summer school format. Beth had a copy of the text and prepared for each session. We saw an improvement in our child's grades as a result of the tutoring provided. Thank you Beth.
My daughter always finds her sessions with Beth extremely helpful. She is doing much better in Spanish 2 thanks to Beth. :)
I really like the way that Beth teaches. She is patient and I learn a lot with her. I improved my English. Thank you.
Beth Z. was a very good ACT tutor in my opinion. She took the time to do all the practice tests that I was doing so that we could go over them together. Her availability was flexible, and we always had a place to meet whether it be at her house or the library. She is very kind and friendly and has some great ACT strategies to share! I would recommend Beth as an ACT tutor for any subject, especially reading and English. She is very skilled at analyzing texts and teaching grammatical rules.
Beth is a terrific tutor. I started my son with her over the summer to get him up to speed in Spanish for the upcoming school year. Beth does a great job of tailoring her approach to the student. She listened to my son to learn what topics were of interest to him, then focused her Spanish lesson around those topics so he stayed interested. My son found an online tool for learning Spanish that he liked and Beth incorporated that into her approach as well. She finds the right way to engage her student.
Between camps and summer trips, our schedule was a bit erratic and Beth was very flexible in finding times/locations that worked for us, including a few weeks where he had lessons using Skype. I highly recommend Beth as a Spanish tutor.
I hired Beth as an English tutor for my mother who came to visit from Europe. Beth did great. Not only did my mom brush up on her English, but she actually had a lot of fun too. Classes were very interactive and focused on using English in real life situations; Beth came up with great ideas as to how they could enjoy the time together and learn at the same time. Overall, it was a great experience for my mom and I highly recommended Beth.
I started studying Spanish at DePaul University in the fall of 2013. I had never studied Spanish before and was eager to progress as fast as possible, so I asked my professor to refer me to a competent tutor. He referred me to Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Zeiss and I have worked with Beth ever since.
Beth has helped me a lot on several areas. We have worked on my pronunciation, which was awful at the beginning, due to the fact that I know French. And we have worked on my written Spanish where Beth has been tremendously helpful. With Beth’s help, I have a much better understanding of Spanish grammar and my vocabulary has grown. My plan is to continue to work with Beth and I can highly recommend her.
Beth has been a great tutor. My 8th grader was able to raise her math grade to B+ in one quarter. She returns call and emails promptly. I have been very pleased with my experience. I would strongly recommend her.
Beth is a terrific Spanish tutor. My daughter is 15 and she is not very patient with some tutors. She really liked Beth and wanted to have her every time she needs a tutor.
This last time, my daughter needed her on last minute notice. Beth made herself available to help my daughter prepare for a test. My daughter got an A on that test. I would highly recommend Beth to anyone for Spanish!
Beth is one of the best tutors when it comes to Probability and Statistics. She was well-prepared to work when we met and she was also great when explaining the materials. On my Probability and Statistics quiz I got 100% and I have Beth to thank for that. Thank you Beth!
She is nice and patient. I am glad that she can help me. It is worthwhile to get help from her.
Beth tutored our son in his Spanish and we are very happy with the result. Before Beth's tutoring, our son was getting a C in his Spanish class and in order to help him improve his grade, we found Beth through WyzAnt. Beth is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience. After just a month of Beth's help, our son got a B last semester. Right now our son is very confident in Spanish and consistently getting As in his test with Beth's help. We are very confident that our son will get a much better grade this semester. Thanks so much, Beth. We strongly recommend Beth to everyone who is interested in finding a qualified and effective tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The English portion of the ACT requires a student to choose the best wording in a variety of sample passages. Both grammar and writing skills come into play with this section. My expertise in language as a PhD in Literature allows me to guide my students in correct word usage and paragraph organization. Students and I complete practice tests furnished by the ACT, pausing to review basic recurring grammar points. We practice until the student knows the material cold, and is able to face exam day with confidence.
I will help you get the score you need on the ACT!
16 years of teaching have given me the skill to know HOW to teach you.
Constant review of the material tells me WHAT to teach you.
Test taking strategies, an in-depth knowledge of how people learn best, and an awareness of the specific format and breakdown of the ACT Math test will help you learn WHAT to study, HOW to study, and HOW to take the test.
Let me help you get the score you want for the ACT reading test.
I have a strong background in teaching, a Ph.D. in Hispanic literature, and specific knowledge of the ACT reading format.
16 years of working with students has taught me how to perceive students' strengths and weaknesses in a short time.
Although I am not a "math whiz," I did start Algebra early in 7th grade, then moved up to Geometry at the high school in 8th grade. By the time I finished high school I had taken AB Calculus, and did BC at college.
My approach to math is to try to understand it instead of doing it by rote, which in the long run makes it easier.
Hi! My daughter is a first grader, so I am very familiar with the math curriculum being taught nowadays. In addition, I am good with children. For example, I am a volunteer Sunday School teacher for the 1st grade at church.
Math concepts have always been easy for me because I truly understand what is going on and am able to communicate it in the simplest way. With kids I like to use manipulable items to help them visual the concepts.
I have always worked hard at math and enjoyed it, progressing through Calculus during my college years. Recently I took a course in Statistics and reawakened my love of math. I currently tutor two students in Prealgebra and like to instill confidence in them so they know that math is something you can be good at if you do it enough. When I took the Basic Skills test for my teaching certificate I received a perfect score on the math section.
Currently I am taking a Literacy class at Northeastern Illinois University to learn the best and most recent methods for teaching reading. I am also a volunteer reading fluency tutor for the District 65 schools (Evanston/Skokie). My methods of teaching reading include choosing a topic of very high interest to the student, and also ensuring that the book is the correct level. Research shows that reading a book where more than 5% of the words are unknown causes frustration.
16 years of teaching: high school, college, private tutoring.
