Hi! I'm Nia, and I have a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, specializing in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, along with a master's in Psychology and a bachelor's in Psychology with minors in Biology and Mental Health. I tutor psychology, neuroscience, biology, chemistry, and statistics, and I work with high school students, undergraduates, and graduate students.

If you're taking Intro to Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Research Methods, Statistics, Brain and Language, Human Development, General Biology, or General Chemistry, I've either taught the course, taken it myself, or used the material extensively in a research setting. At Northwestern, I was a teaching assistant across these areas and mentored 11 undergraduate research assistants in research methods, statistics, and experimental design. I also spent four years tutoring student-athletes in chemistry, neuroscience, biology, statistics, and psychology, and I currently mentor high school students through independent research projects. I adapt to where you already are, how you learn, and what your specific course actually expects, because the syllabus matters as much as the subject.

In our sessions, I break complicated material into manageable pieces and use concrete examples and active practice, so you leave understanding why something works rather than simply having memorized that it does. I'm comfortable if you're catching up, preparing for an exam, stuck on one concept that isn't clicking, or trying to build better study and problem-solving habits overall. Tell me what you're working on and what's been difficult, and we'll build the sessions around that.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, where my program area was cognitive and affective neuroscience and my research focused directly on attention, working memory, and decision-making. That training means I understand the specific cognitive demands that make coursework difficult for students with ADHD, including sustained attention, task initiation, working memory load, and shifting between tasks. I have extensive experience working one-on-one with students who are struggling in a course, and I build sessions around structure: breaking assignments into defined steps, setting one clear goal per session, and using active recall and spaced practice rather than rereading, which does not hold attention well. I tailor everything to the student’s actual coursework and deadlines, so the strategies we build are practiced on the work in front of them rather than in the abstract.
Biology

Biology

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, specializing in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, as well as a master’s degree in Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology. My academic training has given me a strong foundation in biology, neuroscience, human physiology, and biological research methods. I also have extensive experience with scientific research, experimental design, data analysis, and interpreting biological and behavioral data. I have several years of experience mentoring and teaching students in scientific settings. At Northwestern, I have trained and mentored undergraduate research assistants, helping students develop their understanding of scientific concepts, research methods, and data analysis. As a tutor, I focus on breaking complex biological concepts into clear, manageable pieces and connecting foundational principles to real-world examples. I am comfortable helping students with biology coursework, exam preparation, difficult concepts, study strategies, and scientific reasoning, and I tailor each session to the student's course, academic level, and learning goals.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, as well as a master’s degree in Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology. In addition to my coursework in chemistry, I spent four years conducting research in an organic chemistry laboratory as an undergraduate researcher, gaining extensive hands-on experience with chemical research, laboratory techniques, experimental design, and scientific analysis. My undergraduate chemistry research focused on organometallic chemistry and pharmaceutical research and resulted in a peer-reviewed publication. I have extensive experience working with students and mentoring students in scientific settings. As a tutor, I focus on making difficult chemistry concepts understandable by breaking problems into clear steps and emphasizing the underlying principles rather than memorization alone. I am comfortable helping students with chemistry coursework, problem-solving, exam preparation, and laboratory concepts, and I tailor instruction to each student's academic level and goals.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University and have published peer-reviewed research, so I have worked through the full arc of a long writing project, from a rough first draft through substantial revision to a finished piece. My academic background in cognitive and affective psychology informs how I teach voice and character, since the mechanics of attention, memory, and emotion are what make a reader’s experience of a scene convincing. I have extensive experience mentoring students one-on-one through independent projects, giving both line-level and structural feedback, and helping writers who are stuck identify the actual problem in the draft. My approach is to read closely, name what is working before what is not, and give the student concrete revisions to try rather than general encouragement.
English

English

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, with a master’s degree in Psychology from Northwestern and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa. Academic writing has been central to my work throughout, from a peer-reviewed publication in organic chemistry as an undergraduate researcher through writing and defending a doctoral dissertation. I have extensive experience mentoring students on written work, including guiding research mentees through drafting, revision, and argument structure. As a tutor, I focus on grammar, sentence structure, organization, and clarity, and I work from the student’s own writing rather than from generic exercises, so the instruction applies directly to the assignments they are being graded on.
Literature

Literature

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, as well as a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. My training involved close reading and critical analysis of complex texts, and I have extensive experience writing and teaching students how to build an argument from evidence. I help students understand what they are reading, analyze themes, characters, and structure, and develop strong, well-supported essays about literary works. I focus on helping students form their own interpretations and express them clearly.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University with a specialization in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, as well as a master's degree in Psychology. My doctoral research examined the neural and cognitive processes underlying attention, memory, decision-making, mind-wandering, and creative problem-solving. I have hands-on research experience with EEG, eye-tracking, behavioral experimentation, and quantitative analysis using R and Python. I have also mentored and trained students in neuroscience research methods and enjoy breaking complex neurobiological concepts into clear, understandable pieces.
Psychology

Psychology

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, specializing in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, with additional degrees in Psychology from Northwestern and the University of Northern Iowa. My research and teaching experience spans cognitive, social, developmental, and behavioral psychology, with a particular focus on attention, decision-making, memory, and problem-solving. I have extensive experience mentoring and teaching students in psychology, research methods, statistics, and experimental design. I tailor instruction to each student's course, academic level, and learning goals, with an emphasis on building genuine conceptual understanding rather than memorization.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, where my training focused on cognitive and affective neuroscience, including how people learn, remember, and manage stress. I have taught and tutored college students, including student-athletes balancing demanding schedules, and I have mentored high school students through long-term research projects. I help students build study strategies that are grounded in research on learning, such as spaced practice and self-testing, and I work with them on organization, time management, and exam preparation. I tailor my approach to each student’s courses, schedule, and learning style.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, where I wrote and successfully defended a doctoral dissertation in cognitive and affective neuroscience. I have published peer-reviewed research and have worked through the full research process, from literature review and study design through analysis, writing, revision, and defense. I currently mentor research students on independent projects intended for publication, which involves helping them scope a question, structure an argument, and work through successive drafts. As a tutor, I help students break a thesis into manageable stages, build a defensible argument, and revise with their committee’s expectations in mind, rather than approaching the document as one overwhelming task.
Writing

Writing

I hold a PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, as well as a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Over the course of my training, I wrote and edited research papers, peer-reviewed publications, grant proposals, and a doctoral dissertation, and I have mentored many students through their own writing projects. I help students with all kinds of writing, including essays, research papers, personal statements, and theses, and I focus on clear organization, strong arguments, and precise language. I work with students at every stage, from developing an idea to final revisions, and I tailor my feedback to their level and goals.
