Hi, I’m Dan! I graduated from college with honors in English, Writing, and History, and later received a graduate degree in journalism. Hi, I’m Dan! I graduated from college with honors in English, Writing, and History, and later received a graduate degree in journalism. One of the things I remember most about school is how teachers (and students) shared what they knew and had learned in a way that encouraged learning and discussion. I was not shy about asking questions – or providing feedback to others in a friendly and constructive way. These experiences inspired me on my path to become a communicator, a writer, and tutor. I have always believed that an in-person approach is integral to the teaching and learning experience, at least for me. I am also very thorough and organized about creating lesson plans that are fun and address specific needs and goals of students. I always ask myself: What questions might a student ask? What will help them learn from a lesson plan?
I have tutored young children in reading in a school-based setting as well as middle-school children in reading and writing (in that case, in an after-school community-based program). In both instances, I tutored students on a one-on-one basis for about a year. I also tutored high-school students in history and writing for a year, in their homes. In my work as a writer, I have coached many interns over the years (high school and college-age) in writing.
My experience as a writer has featured writing extensively about education (and families) for newspapers, nonprofits, and universities as well as a leading parenting magazine (Chicago Parent). In the last three years, my experience as a storyteller at dozens of storytelling events in Chicago has increased my ability to present and listen responsively to stories in person, and provide feedback.
I’m very easy to reach. Contact me any time with questions or to schedule a lesson!
