Hi! I'm Lauren. I received B.S. degrees in both chemical & biomolecular engineering and in chemistry from the University of Maryland and a M.S. degree in chemistry from Northwestern University.

As someone who is neurodivergent, a first-generation low-income student, and a child of immigrants, I've had to be proactive and resilient, and I firsthand understand the importance of equitable and inclusive teaching practices. For tutoring sessions, I am adaptable to ensure the session is most helpful to your needs and to leverage your strengths. Tutoring is not a regurgitation of my knowledge but a way I can coach and mentor you to check you're making progress to your academic goals. Tutoring is a two-way dialogue, and I accommodate anything that you need to make the most of the session, whether it be chiming into explanations to needing extra times of silence to internalize information.

Over the span of eight years, I have a multitude of teaching experience within roles as a university teaching assistant (TA), SI leader, and tutor. As a SI leader, I effectively lesson planned and facilitated collaborative group study sessions tackling a few of the most difficult concepts from lecture. Herein, I learned not to unidirectionally disseminate information, but to empower students individually as active possessors of their own learning. During sessions, I catered information to individual students of varying preparedness levels and learning styles for organic chemistry, biochemistry, and general chemistry. For two courses, I received an Outstanding SI Session Award. Furthermore, I have TA experience with organic and analytical chemistry labs and chemical engineering thermodynamics, kinetics, and separations courses. At Northwestern, I received the L. Carroll King Award for Excellence in 100-Level Teaching Award. More specific information on my pedagogical experiences and approaches can be provided upon request.

Feel free to contact me to schedule a tutoring session. Looking forward to work with you!

Approved Subjects

Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering

I have experience serving as an undergraduate teaching fellow from 2020-2021 for Chemical Engineering Kinetics & Reactor Design, Thermodynamics I, and Separations Processes at the University of Maryland, College Park. In this role I served to lead recitations and office hours, grade assignments, and further, help students learn and troubleshoot chemical engineering-specific software including ASPEN HYSYS. I additionally have interdisciplinary research experience during my time as a chemistry graduate student at Northwestern University, where I took some graduate level chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science and engineering courses.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have been a supplemental instruction leader, tutor, and teaching assistant for several chemistry courses from AP chemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. I have a masters in materials/inorganic chemistry from Northwestern University. I focus on your needs and can help from lecture material to laboratory experiments. I can also help with chemistry data analysis like spectroscopy and microscopy techniques and modeling software like ChemDraw, Avogadro, MestreNova.
Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics

I have taken two semesters of chemical engineering thermodynamics of single and multi-component liquid-liquid, liquid-vapor mixtures. Furthermore, I also have physical chemistry thermodynamics laboratory experience, as well as a background in materials science thermodynamics of several solid phases. I have a unique multidisciplinary perspective on this subject. I have formerly served as a teaching assistant for chemical engineering thermodynamics I course, so I am familiar with teaching how to select the appropriate equations-of-state to calculate system properties, the integration of mass and energy balances to model a process system, and use of simulation software such as ASPEN-HYSYS.
