Hi! I'm Lauren. I received B.S. degrees in both chemical & biomolecular engineering and in chemistry from the University of Maryland and a M.S. degree in chemistry from Northwestern University.
As someone who is neurodivergent, a first-generation low-income student, and a child of immigrants, I've had to be proactive and resilient, and I firsthand understand the importance of equitable and inclusive teaching practices. For tutoring sessions, I am adaptable to ensure the session is most helpful to your needs and to leverage your strengths. Tutoring is not a regurgitation of my knowledge but a way I can coach and mentor you to check you're making progress to your academic goals. Tutoring is a two-way dialogue, and I accommodate anything that you need to make the most of the session, whether it be chiming into explanations to needing extra times of silence to internalize information.
Over the span of eight years, I have a multitude of teaching experience within roles as a university teaching assistant (TA), SI leader, and tutor. As a SI leader, I effectively lesson planned and facilitated collaborative group study sessions tackling a few of the most difficult concepts from lecture. Herein, I learned not to unidirectionally disseminate information, but to empower students individually as active possessors of their own learning. During sessions, I catered information to individual students of varying preparedness levels and learning styles for organic chemistry, biochemistry, and general chemistry. For two courses, I received an Outstanding SI Session Award. Furthermore, I have TA experience with organic and analytical chemistry labs and chemical engineering thermodynamics, kinetics, and separations courses. At Northwestern, I received the L. Carroll King Award for Excellence in 100-Level Teaching Award. More specific information on my pedagogical experiences and approaches can be provided upon request.
Feel free to contact me to schedule a tutoring session. Looking forward to work with you!
