Hello students and parents:

My name is Deborah P., and I have over ten years of experience teaching mathematics in secondary education, seven of which include teaching all levels of Algebra with traditional and inquiry-based curriculum. In addition, I have instructed students in middle school mathematics through Pre-calculus. Currently, I tutor middle school and high school mathematics. I am looking forward to assisting your student and helping them to achieve their fullest potential this school year.

I incorporate a variety of strategies in my instruction-tutoring methods to reach every student. Examples of strategies utilized are direct instruction; helping students work out problems. Other methods are visual and hands-on instruction, or I will use everyday experiences to relate to the math concept and if necessary I will use authentic inquiry-based methods and questioning. We will also study and learn the vocabulary-key terms associated with mathematical concepts for better understanding. And, of course, I will include practice and drills to reinforce math skills and concepts. All of these strategies are designed not only to master a concept, but also to help students better understand and apply the concept to other situations-subjects.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have over ten years of experience teaching mathematics in secondary education, seven of which include teaching all levels of Algebra with traditional and inquiry-based curriculum. My expertise and knowledge includes basic algebraic operations such as order of operations, evaluating expressions, simplifying and expanding the distributive property. I really enjoy explaining how to solve one-step and two-step equations to students in middle or high school. In additon, I am able to help students develop logical and critical thinking skills to solve simple and challenging word problems.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I bring over ten years of teaching mathematics in secondary education; four of which include teaching College Prep Algebra and Advanced Algebra. My expertise includes solving systems of equations and inequalities, matrices and determinants. In addition, I have helped students to gain knowledge and understanding of exponential and logarithmic functions, quadratic and polynomial functions, and trigonometric functions. My goal is to build upon the algebraic and geometric skills learned in previous courses so your student can use prior knowledge to gain new knowledge about more functions.
Geometry,

Geometry

My expertise in teaching Geometry includes explaining the following concepts and skills: -Points, lines and collinear points -Planes and intersection of two planes Practice drawing and naming points, lines, collinear points and planes -Line segments and their measures Practice drawing, naming and measuring line segments Using the Segment Addition Postulate and algebra Finding segment length using distance formula Angles and their measures Practice naming angles, and measuring angles with a protractor Classifying types of angles: acute, obtuse, right and straight Exploring the concepts of Bisector: Mini-project: Folding Bisectors for angles and segments Finding midpoints and endpoints of segments -Using the Angle Addition Postulate Calculating measures of adjacent angles Using angle bisectors - Angles and Intersecting lines Identify vertical angles and linear pairs Identify complimentary and supplementary angles Finding angle pairs in multi-step problem Reasoning and Proofs Write reasons for steps in a proof and justify your statements for Line Segments Angle pairs Similar and Congruent Figures, Quadrilaterals and Right Triangle Trigonometry
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

My experience with tutoring Pre-algebra has included helping students to master the arithmetic of fractions: adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, multiplying and dividing fractions. Also the arithmetic of decimals: adding, subtracting and multiplying and dividing decimals Identifying and generating equivalent forms of rational numbers including whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Using exponents to represent whole numbers, and exponential and scientific notation In addition, I will reinforce the algebraic order of operation and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties to evaluate expressions. Also evaluating simple algebraic expressions with one variable. Ratios to describe to proportional situations and other concepts will be reinforced as needed.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I bring over ten years of teaching mathematics in secondary education; five of which include teaching and tutoring Precalculus. My expertise involves helping students to connect concepts learned in Algebra 2 and build a bridge to what they are learning in Precalculus. In addition, I help students to gain knowledge and improve understanding of exponential and logarithmic functions, quadratic and polynomial functions, and trigonometric functions, graphs and equations. My goal is to build upon the algebraic and geometric skills learned in previous courses so your student can use prior knowledge to gain new knowledge about more functions.

Very good Algebra tutor

Ms. Deborah is very knowledgeable in her subjects. She was able to explain difficult concepts and provide tools to help our child succeed. She was very patient with our young son who was taking a higher level course. She is also very flexible with scheduling when important exams were coming up. We recommend her services.
